I recently went from an 04 6.0 to an 07 6.0. Just wondering if the consensus was still to use 14 qts of oil in lieu of 15. Apparently, 14 qts gets the oil level above the min. line on the dip stick.....15 almost puts it over.....and the book clearly states not to over fill.
I start out with 13.5 qts and go from there, but usually 13.5-14 quarts is perfect for mine. And as a side note, I get 18mpg driving 75mph down the highway....just in case I get a different mpg using less oil.
14 quarts put the mark mid-point on the hashed area on the dipstick on my 2007.
I read somewhere that the hashed area is 2 quarts worth. If true, then 15 quarts would put me at the top of the hashed area. Not going to try it, since it's hard enough to read in the middle.
Since I'm new at the game of diesels, I read everything I could before my first oil change...and found 13.5, 14.0 and 16.0, so I took the middle road, put 14 in it and promptly had to drain about half a gallon.
Moral of my story is, pour in 12 and work in half gal increments after that.
On my 06 6.0 I had one of my Employees change it on the second oil Change. He put in 16 Qts. I put 10,000 miles on it like that and never had a problem.

Wait, I might be miss understanding... You put 10k on one oil change? or put 10k using 16qts?

This doesn't sound right... Did you pop the filter housing enough to drain the oil out of there? Did you CHANGE the filter. If you did, was it before you put the oil pan plug back in? Or did you mean QUART, not GALLON?

I change the oil every 10,000 miles weather it needs it or not in my 06 and 05 6.0s. That one time he put 16 Qts in and I drove the entire 10,000 miles before I changed the oil again. Unlike my 01 the 6.0s only use about a Qt every 10,000 miles so at about the 5,000 mark I will normally add a Qt.
I did change the filter. I popped the filter seal first (I read that somewhere) and then pulled the plug on the pan. While the pan was draining, I changed the filter.
And I was talking quarts....I bought 6 gallons figuring I'd have plenty left over for the next change...and it doesn't spoil. I've got 2 and a half gallons of Motorcraft oil waiting for the next change.
14 qts is fine. 15 qts won't hurt a thing. One guy says he notices "roughness" in the idle with 15 qts. 'Windage' or frothing will occur with overfilling, but I don't believe even 16 qts would cause any problems. Consider the surface area of the pan of oil, and how much higher 1 qt- over would raise the level toward the spinning crank. 1/4"? 3/8"? More? Less? How much higher would two qts raise it? 3? How high does the level reach when sloshing on turns or rough roads?
Can't believe how many threads there are on this topic. Do a search. You'll find the same info many times over.

I can't believe how much this issue is discussed either. It seems many 6.0 owners treat the dipstick like it is a scientificaly verified, finely calibrated measuring instrument and as a result only refill their engines to 90% of designed oil capacity. Then some, after procurring used oil samples from their reduced oil volume drains, imply that individuals who change at 7,500 miles are subjecting their engines to abuse.
Fire suit now on.
