My 98 f-150 is dripping a few drops of anti-freeze each time I shut it off. It is coming from the area right above the draincock. Checked the upper hose which is right above, thought maybe it is running down, connection is tight. Must be a very small hole because sometimes it leaks nothing, and only leaks under pressure for a few drips and then stops. Fluid is 3 years old, thought I would change it and add a can of JB stop leak. I don't like using stuff like that, but have used it many times, leak always stops, doesn't seem to effect my heat in the winter( on other vehicles) Any thoughts??......( New radiator is minimum $250.00)
It is most likely the side tank leaking where it mounts to the core, I had the same problem and decided to get a new one. IIRC NAPA was close to $300 for a new one.
Yep.... NAPA said possibly 3 different ones, all in the 250-265 range plus tax. I think I'll pull the shroud (sp?) and get a better look this weekend while I am changing oil. The guys at NAPA say that JB stop leak isn't mucky like the Bar's, they even thought it had a green color, but not chunky like Bar's. Someone told me once that many new cars come with some form of stop leak in them right from the factory. Sounds like kind of a good idea, if it's true I would think it saves them a lot of recall for small imperfections that may weep.
i would not think of putting stop leak in my cooling system. its activated by heat and after rebuilding lots of fleet engines.that we used the leak stop in ,it all went in the head passages and limited flow.www.radiators.com
