Greasing from bearings

I would like to grease my front bearings. I have never done it before. I usually get my mechanic to do it but it's time i do it myself. i have manual hubs on the front and I just picked up the lock socket.

Any suggestions or tips on how to proceed?

Thanks

I saw a bearing greaser at Sears a few months ago. It works a lot like the shop greasers because it pushes the grease into the bearings where it's tough to put it in by hand. Now, how well it works, I don't know, but it seems like it would.

Repacking them is definitely a good idea. When you re-pack old bearings, the old grease that gets pushed out looks awful compared to the new stuff.

I just got done doing the very same job to my 86 F-250HD 4x4 Monday. My advice is when you take off something, lay it on a clean surface in the order it came off the axle. Do one side at a time so you can use the other side as a reference. The hubs are pretty simple to take off, but make sure everything is clean and organized. There is a large internal snap ring that holds in the whole assembly. Take a small screwdriver and carefully take out one side and work your way around. Just be warned, it can be a pain. Make sure you have plenty of brake cleaner and spray off all the excess grease from inside the hub area after you get all the internals out of there.

Now is also the time to do the brakes if they're low since you have to take off the calipers. Check the rotors and see if they're in good shape as well. Mine weren't. I had to replace my rotors but they were only $50 a piece for my big ol' truck. When you repack the bearings, make sure you don't touch the rotors too much with your greasy paws, but if you do, spray some brake cleaner on them and wipe them off with a clean rag. It is truly a messy job. But you need to get grease in every part of the bearing. A bearing packer is a lot cleaner than the way I did it, so get the packer.

If you don't have a manual, a HAYNES manual is a lifesaver. My Chilton manual didn't give nearly enough details. But the Haynes did a great job and showed everything. It was the first time I've ever done this kind of job and it was actually pretty easy. I went slow and carefully and it took me 3 1/2 days.

Go ahead and buy two front seals. You will have to dig these out to get the large rear bearing out, and they always seem to get messed up in the process.
