I thought a couple of people that frequent this forum may have some info regarding this. Do any of you know if Pro Fab makes a third gear for a NP 435. I tried finding some info, but everything I find is for the Chevy SM465. The tranny is used for Truck Pulling. Have any of you ever used or know someone that has done this type of upgrade to a 435. Any info is appreciated.
They don't make them for either of the Ford tranny's. They do make a output shaft kit for a Ford married 205 now. If you have a divorced transfer case you can bore the center hole of the bellhousing and use a 2 wheel drive SM 465.
That is kind of what I thought. I've thought about switching to the SM. I know I would have to change the centers of my clutch discs, and now that you brought it to my attention, bore out the center of the bellhousing, and I'm sure I would have to change my bronze pilot shaft bushing. I don't think the two transmissions have the same bolt pattern do they?? I'm assuming taping some new bolt holes would be in the mix.
The Ford guys that you know pulling, are any of them still running the NP, and if so, are they holding up for them. I've never had any problems, but I've added about 250 hp this year and alot more torque. I'm kind of worried about what is going to hold up or not I guess I'll find out in a month or so.
The bolt pattern is different. On a steel bellhousing you can drill the extra holes and weld nuts on the inside. There are alot of guys in this area that run the NP with around 800-900 HP and they hold up.
I made a pilot shaft bushing last week for a local puller that just bought a SM 465 that had a profab three speed kit and it had a Ford input shaft. He had to have his clutch centers changed along with the bushing that I made. It being for a Chevy I really rubbed it in about his new tranny having Ford parts.
I've been considering this option a little more now. I've been to around 10 pulls this year and haven't had any problems with the NP, but I would like the option of running a third gear step up. I was curious about the information you had provided earlier.
I may just be confused, but does a NP input shaft fit into a SM or was that a specially manufactured piece. If it did swap, it would be much easier for me to swap my input into the SM and use my same discs and bearing. I'm thinking it probably is not that simply, but if you could give me a little more information, I would appreciate it.
Also, how does the SM and NP compare in length, or what other factors need to be taken into consideration when doing this swap, i.e. driveshaft lenght, crossmember bolt up etc.?? I have an SM out of the two-wheeler that I used the rearend out of, but I haven't pulled the tranny out yet so I really haven't been able to look into this too much. Plus, we've obviously been busy trying to keep everything up for pulling this season.
I may be able to get my hands on an SM out of a 4wd that already has the ProFab gear. Would I be able to take everything out of the 4wd SM and put it into a 2wd SM?? Any knowledge is appreciated.
