Starting to have problems....

I have a '04 6.0 F350 dually which has about 120,000 miles on it. I am beginning to have some problems:
- I first noticed some oil spots from the front of the engine after I park.
- When putting a bit of a load on the engine, e.g., going up hill or starting
from a stop, the engine occasionally 'coughs' or 'misses'.
- Sometimes the engine seems begins to really bog down for no apparent
reason. During this bog, huge amount of smoke are dumped out of
tailpipe. If I floor it or get out of it and then press the accelerater again,
it clears up.

Any ideas? I am looking to get it in the shop in the next couple of weeks.

Step 1. Replace the fuel filter.
I think your oil drip is unrelated to the power loss at acceleration. Start with the fuel filter and then post back if it has'nt changed, could be the turbo, but I doubt it. I've been told the newer biodiesels have a requirement on the % of bio, but no requirement on the amount of particles in the fuel. My ford dealer recommends new filter about every 10,000 mi, however they are in the business of selling filters. CCC

Front of engine oil leaks may be something simple like the cam or crank sensor, which are no big deal to replace. I would get under there with a light and see if you can trace the leak back. If you have access to a black light, you could put some dye in and check it that way, makes it easier to trace. The intermittant cough, miss, smoke could be a sticky EGR.

Have you done any mods to the truck? Especially recently?

The oil leak sounds easy to fix...it tracing it down that can be a pain with the limited amount of space to work with. I recommend a small finger LED style light...you can put your finger around things that are tough to get a drop light into.

The power loss is your big concern. Is the truck stock? There are several things that can contribute to a power loss so be prepared to approach this a step at a time with some trial and error thrown in.

I just read my original post. I apologize. It is a 2003. I should proofread better.

The truck is stock. Outside of changing filters and oil, everything else came from the factory. I will change the filters (fuel, oil, air) this weekend. Someone mentioned the EGR?

I do appreciate the help.

Took it to the shop

I ended up taking it to the shop. They replaced the ICP (Injector Control Pressure) sensor. This is where the massive amounts of oil was coming from. They also replaced the EGR and updated the software.

The leak went from MASSIVE to a couple of drops. I may take it back in this week to get this looked into.

The stall is gone, but it seems I have a bit less power.

That is probably the result of the PCM reflash. Totally normal in that regard...

Good to hear you are back on the road...with only a few drops. Hope they get the rest taken care of.
