should the tierod easily come off the pitman arm once cotter pin and nut are off? if not what would be the easiest way to get it off without spending money. just want to see if the joints are going bad.
IMO, the easiest is go to go to an Auto Parts store that does the "tool loan" program and borrow a puller. You can also try tapping/hitting the stud. But with the puller it should come right off. Where I live, both Advanced Auto and NAPA have the kits to loan out.
Edit: **I also suggest you use the puller not the fork. The fork may damage the rubber boot.
Do not put a hammer on the stud, especially if you're going back together with the same end link. Instead of hitting the stud, shock the end of the pitman arm around the stud......generally the link will pop right out with minimal pressure.
Yes, good advice not to hit the stud. You can tap around the arm where the stud goes through and it may fall out. Or, you can use a puller and it will come out easy as well. When you do which ever, you may also want to first secure the rod with a bungee cord so it doesn't fall to the ground or your fore-head.
I just went to look, I doubt you could hit the stud with a hammer if you tried. It's pretty tight.
I have never cahnged one on my PSD but have changed them on other vehicles. I will usually take the cotter key out and remove the nut, tie up the tierod, then take 2 hammers and hit the arm on each side simutaniously and they will usually fall out in just a couple wacks.
