question on 2002 fx4

Hey guys,
I am looking for a f150 and wanted your advice. I found a nice looking truck down the street, but I don't know a ton about f150s.
It is a 2002 f150 fx4 supercrew with about 44,000 miles on it, xlt trim. The seller has a carfax report and its clean. The truck itself looks good and the seller is a friend of a friend.
My question is this, is the 2002 model a good year to own? What kind of reliability issues am I looking at? All opinions welcome.

Welcome to the forum

My 01 has been a really good truck so far @ 70,000 miles. If the price is right, I wouldn't be scared of it at all.

1998 is the only year I'd be worried about. 1999 got even better, and 2000 was even better than that. 2001 to 2004 were very similar.

Good to hear. The price isn't bad...Im going to try to talk him down to 16000 or 16500, plus it already has flowmasters...saves me a couple bucks there.

Haven't had any major issues with mine. It's due for a new exhaust at 104K but has been a performer.

WOW at $16,500, Ide say jump all over it thats half of what I paid for my 01 new, it has 74,000mls with no issues at all, I did change the oil pressure switch other than maintenance stuff its been rock solid.and has been run pretty hard with several non stop 1800 mile trips...you did say 43,000mls right..If i had it to do over I woulda gotten the crew cab for the kids..But then my wife would,nt have gotten the 97 4x4 expedition she loves sooooo much..the F150 is a good solid truck..that looks great...

2002-2003 is at the near end of 97-03 body, usually it's well designed and engineered at end of body years. Edmunds rated used F150 as best buy for used full size pickup. Love my 02 F150 to death. My teen daughter said I treat my F150 better than her. I find it amusing..... hehe

Glad to hear so many good reports. The plug issue has me a little concerned. I hadn't even heard about it until infinity brought it up. A google search brings up a whole lot of people complaining about it....how often do you think it really happens? This is a real nice looking truck, just have to convince the CFO (wife).

It happens but on a small percentage of trucks. You must figure, for every one problem that you find online, there are several thousands of trucks that have no problems. I personally know of no trucks that have blown a plug.

Yeah man these trucks are good trucks mostly reliable and durable and last a long time with mainteince but then there is a odd one but if the carfax report is clean and for 16500 or 16000 i would jump on it too for a 02 that is a good deal the flowmasters are a plus

Its got the 5.4 ltr, light silver, clean inside and out....
Buying it is still up in the air, depends how much it costs to fix our car (99 q45). We were ready to trade it in on an 04 f150 but the dealer hosed us, so now its back to deciding between expensive repairs on an old car or cutting our loses and buying a used truck.
