Hey there, I am new to the forum. I recently bought a 2002 Ford F250 Super Duty 4x4 with the 5.4L V8. I am in need of new tires. Eventually I would like to do a lift and all of that, unfortunately at the moment I do not have the money. I am thinking about getting some temporary mud terrain tires. I am wondering if a 285/75/16 will fit onto my truck with the original steel wheels without a leveling kit or anything along those lines.
I have a 2001 F250SD. Yes the 285/75/16 is the tire to run on the stock rim. You can fit a 305/70/16 except it is not recommended to run it on a narrow 7" rim. It might give you side wall sway problems in cornering. I wish the factory rim was an 8" but its not. Stick with the 285/75/16. I ran Brigestone Dueller all terrains. Loved them got 55k miles out of each set.

I run 315/75/16 on stock rims with no sway problems however, the 285/75/16 I had on before did wear more in the middle than on the edges.
Soilman is right the only reason I have the 305's on the 250 is because they were on the 350 when I bought it. I did not like all the weight of the cc 7.3 4x4 on the 305 especily towing so I put them on my 250 sc 4x4 5.4 that will not tow much any more. Actually what I put on the 350 is 295's not 285's to get the weight rating I wanted and RWL's BFG AT KO's
Lets just say the 285 is the widest tire the pros can reccomend on the 7" rim. Hell I ran 14.5" wide mud tire on a 8" wide rim when I was young and dumb but that didnt make it safe. Besides you needed a lift to run the 315/75/16 in the front didn't you. He asked what would fit without a lift.
In the BFG the Differance in width of a 285 and a 295 is 00.1 of an inch the 285 is 11.4 and the 295 is 11.5. Now the 305 is 12.2 and the standard 265 is 10.5. This is why I figured that the 295 was Ok

Yes, and the second part of my response referrenced the 285s previously on the truck tended to wear more in the middle with the stock tires than on the edges. And I ran them at first with no lift.
Man I would not have ever guessed you could get a 315/75/16 under the front without a leveling kit. On paper a 315/75/16 is the same as a 35x12.5x16. COOL!
285s or 295s will fit no problem. For my 285 FC-2s I had to adjust the molded Ford mudflaps on the front because it rubbed slightly, but was a 5 min. fix.
