Hi I'm new to this site and have an ongoing problem. I have a f350 late '99 4wd. 7.3. It will quit like you turned the key off if you; hit a small bump on the pass.side tire, shut pass. side door, or turn right. It dosn't happen all the time but, it happens quite often. This can be dangerous because you lose power steering and brakes when it's not running.
When this happens, I have to shift to nuetral, turn the key off, then it restarts right away. I've gotten good at doing this fast but it's really irratating. If you don't turn the key to off pos. first, it will not restart. This has been going on for a couple of years and we can't figure out what the problem is.
Have replaced the CPS a couple of years ago and that didn't stop it. Awhile back we went trough the wiring harness to look for bad conections or chaffed wires. Didn't find any problems but, the truck did not quit for almost a year after that! So we might have hit the problem without knowing it. If someone could solve this for me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Dave B.
The CPS can go out over and over again. Some guys have gone through three or more. I'd replace the CPS again if it's been a couple years. The way it is dying on you sounds an awful lot like a CPS issue.
When you replaced your cps what type did replace it with? several members have had to replace the replacement part with an oem. Ford is now selling the cps as of today for 25.00 part # f7tz12ko73b. Might be worth replacing and seeing if that helps.
Jeff
Have you checked for any faults codes? Did you fixed the badly designed 9 pin UVC connectors?? If not, they will separate and become loose. I fixed mine a couple of months ago with a homemade shim under the plastic locking tabs.. The following website the cps is $15.23 + shipping.. I read they are out of stock already.. looks like everyone is buying the new cps... anyway see: http://fordparts.com/cart/?pn=F7TZ-1...&submit=Search

Dave, a CPS can fail at any time but when you went through the harness, I'll bet you did enough wiggling that you had a corroded connector that made contact again. Ove the year, it became corroded enough to start giving you problems again. I'll put my money on a connector but as you know, it's a tedious job. Get some dielectric grease and check them by opening each one up, check for corrosion, then reseating a couple of times. Coat the sealing surfaces of the connector with the grease before final assembly. I don't envy the job.
