Volt meeter hook up question
Volt meeter hook up question
When you guys hook up a volt meeter where do you usually run the wires to? What I did was I checked a few wires under the dash to see what had 12v when the key was on and nothing with the key off. What I encountered after that was the bronco driver window wouldnt roll up. I pulled the switch at the door and checked for power and then I majically did and it rolled up, and When I rolled the passenger window up it would go 4 inches ish and hesitate 4 inches hesitate ect ect. I disconnected the volt meeter and now my pass window is still acting up. I did splice into an orange wire right behind the ash tray ( its and 87 302) which was in a grey connector going up into something. Either way the only thing that I did was connect the volt meeter there. I disconected it and im still having probs. Any Ideas?
I would think you broke or aggrivated a shorted wire. It really depends on how you probed the wires, did you just poke them or do you have a shielded wire probe?
For checking voltage, just ground the black probe to the body. I like to use aligator clamps to a bolt or stud so I don't have to hold the ground wire. Unless you were checking ohm, you didn't do anything other steal a couple of mili-amps from the circuit. If it's working differently, I'd suspect a wire problem.

Well the window tries to roll up so its getting voltage, it rolls down very nicely. It could have just been the motor took a crap on me at the same time I was doing this...
But the drivers window did it too just for a second though... A window motor is only 18 bucks with a lifetime warranty at sturdevants here in town so ill just replace it anyway. Where did you run your volt meeter wires to??

Does the motor stop when the window hesitates, or can you still hear it turning?
The reason I ask is because if you hear the motor still spinning, the plastic gears in it may be starting to strip out. The hestation you discribed sound exactly how my started acting when these gears stripped out. It eventually got so bad (procrastinated fixing it) the window would only go down about an inch on its own and had to be assisted the rest of the way down and up.

If i am checking for positive, I put the ground wire to an exposed part of the body or to a bolt/ground. The other lead you use to test.
If your looking for gound, you just have to hold the positive lead on a hot fuse and probe with the negative.
