Time to replace brake pads?

My dad's 04 has 84K miles on the truck, and he bought the truck about 16K miles ago, and doesn't know if he's still on the stock pads or not, but it's time to change them.
What seems to be a good pad to use? Stock?
What kind of ceramic pads worked for ya'll?

Also, is there anything special to changing the pads on these trucks, or are they just like any other truck.

If there are any links you guys have that would help too, I did a quick search and didn't get the answers I was looking for.
Thanks for any help

My stock pads worked great but they were very very dusty...esp. the front ones. I put ceramic pads on and no dust, and they work great. I went with the Akebono pads. Got them from a FTE sponsor RockAuto.com

Yeah mine worked fine, I just didn't want to have to clean my wheels every other day to keep them clean....I have the chrome wheels so the dust shows very quickly. Mine sounds no different then stock....my brother has had a set on his '04 for 2 years now, no noise, hardly any wear.

About how much should I expect to pay?
And is there any trouble in changing the pads or should it be a cake walk?

Thanks for the help so far.

I think the fronts were $66 and the rear was $60. As far as changing them my neighbor works at a Ford garage and he did it for me one evening. He had them done in no time, with no problems.

I put on satified ceramic pads all around, It was easy. There is drum brakes on the e-brake in the rear, They should last the life of the truck if you stay away from driving with the e-brake on, I left the stock e-brake pads on they looked new and I changed everything else at 50,000. The rear pads wear as fast as the front so plan on changing all. I had my rotors surfaced but they couldn't get all the groves out, be aware I could not find rotors in stock anywhere but at ford and they were very costly. The 04 also has the haritage truck that has 5 lug wheels and the parts stores will almost always order those by mastake. Make sure you have a plan to replace the rotors. I was able to find better rotors drilled and slotted for the same price as the ones from ford. Like I wrote I ended up having the stock ones surfaced to the minimum but it was not perfect. The actual brake job was as easy as any brakes I have ever done. The ceramic pads have much less dust, no noise, but don't seem to stop quite as strong. Good luck.

Goto your local AutoZone or Advance Auto. They stock ford rotors. My front ones where $50 each and rear $40 each! FYI you have the base payload package (six lug, the non-base payload is 7 lug). $120 for Bendix cermamic all the way around. Free Compressor tool loaner. Total cost to do $300

well mine lasted all of 18k miles before the pads were toast. I put ceramic pads on my expedition but when hauling or towing you do experiance pedal fade. I decided to go with Z rated carbon metallic pads on the f-150. Zero pedal fade, no brake dust and solid braking. The pads cost 75.00 a pair but autozone has them mismarked on their website for 35.99. i was able to get the store to pricematch them.
