OK...So the other day, I backed out of my buddies driveway with my ATV in the bed....CRUNCH!!! Dammit! Just laid over the neighbors mailbox. Only a small scratch on my tailgate since the bumber did the rest...But now to my question....Did the 99's have the backup warning option? I have the Lariat package on mine but no sensors. Can I get a bumber or set of sensors for my truck and then the switch for the dash? If I can...how much modifying or work am I looking at? What all will I need in parts? Is it worth it?
There are a few aftermarket companies that offer universal kits for backup sensors. I know bullydog has several different types(same sensors, but different displays to interpret what they are sensing i.e. can have LCD screens). Here is a link(hopefully it will work) http://www.bullydog.com/index.php?cu...iscat=114&=SID as to installation(price and/or labor time) I couldn't tell you, I was thankful that mine came with it from the factory. I do like them, I did add a back up camera as well to my system and both of those are a nice aid. I don't know which brand is better or not though, I have been happy with bullydog stuff in the past, which is why I have mentioned them. I don't see anything that limits them to model yrs, so you should be able to use it on yours.
Install is a pain and to do it correctly requires angle guages and a hole saw.
For the factory, it is most likely a component of the body module and would need to be programmed if it even has the hardware. Aftermarket is going to be a more sure bet.
I have installed a kit like the link that is posted above. It is a little tricky to install because of the metal bumper on our trucks. If the hole is a shade to tight the sensors will falsely activate. If they are to large the sensors will not stay in place well. The other thing that concerns me is chrome peeling or rust around the hole.
I did get my installation to work fine with some fine tuning of the holes.
Let me know if you need for info on the installation.
I just use my mirrors,,,,,, can't stand those D@#$% things on her Ex, I also had the 99 Lariat, and no they weren't an option yet, I ordered my truck and they werent on the list of things yet, neither was the door keypad, which I LOVE on her Ex.
Not tryin to be a SA, but I have heard of many people getting used to them and forgetting to LOOK BEHIND THEM when they back-up and BAMMO.....
Mirrors been around a really long time,,,,, they seem to work

I have to much of a habit of using the mirrors. I just like the idea of knowing something is back there like a mailbox post when I have a load in the bed and the item I am about to squash can't be seen directly behind the truck.
I agree 100% in having them as an aid to the mirrors. When my ATV's are loaded I can't see squat in my mirrors. I just finished my F-550 bed and installed the sensors below. It is a slick kit that is $100. Even comes with hole saw and angle adjusters. The hole saw is made for rubber type bumper so I used a drill through my tubing bumper. They work great. I looked at buying the ones from Ford but they want $100 a sensor and another $130 for the module that ties into the PCM. Over $500 to use the Ford setup on the 08's. So for $100 could buy several if they don't last and still be way ahead. I like this one so well I am buying another kit for my 03 Cobra. Since my Cobra is silver, I got the Silver sensors. When I buy the other kit, will get black and swap out of the truck. I bought silver thinking that if I did not like the kit in my truck, just put in the Cobra.... Another neat thing is no wiring to the cab. THe rear sensors are wireless to the digital console. Makes installing a breeze...
This company offers a bunch of systems to fit just about any setup...
Here is there link..
I put an aftermarket set on my 04, CC, DRW. I have the knockout tools to put the holes in the bumber which is an electrical conduit hole knockout. I used the 1/2 inch and it worked fine. Ordered mine off Ebay and took about 3 hours to install. I added a switch to turn it off when I have a trailer hooked up. You may also consider a rear camera. You can pick them up for around $100 with monitor. They are a license plate frame camera. I have been happy with my sensors. Can't remember the brand, sorry.
I picked up a wireless back up camera at walmart for $99. It works well and is great for hooking up a trailer when adjusted correctly. I back up right to the trailer in one shot, no help needed. They also sale them at Pepboys. Good luck.
I bought a backup sensors for my wifes 07 Tahoe from backupsensors.com and they have worked great. The Bullydog system I bought also come with a really good holesaw for drilling thru the bumpers.
We did not get them to keep from looking behind when backing because you can do several walk-arounds before backing and a little one can step behind the truck and the height of our truck can be higher than their heads.
They were not an original option I wanted on my truck but found a truck on the lot that had them and after having them I really like them.
