Charging System
This past weekend i was at my mom's to check on the truck at start it for the first time this year. After charging the battery and using starting fluid the 240 came to life.
The problem I have is when the engine is at idle the ammeter is fine but when reving the engine the ammeter pegs to the right indicating charge and the belt squeals which means a heavy load on the alternator. When I removed the positive battery terminal and reattached it the condition went away. This also happen last fall before putting it away for winter.
I'm thinking that the voltage regulator is causing this but not sure. Something seems to be loading down the alternator until i remove the battery from the system.
Any ideas?
Truck is a '66 with the 240 and Custom Cab.

If alt. is peging to the charge side, it does sound like the regulator is over charging, this will cook the battery. Have the alt. checked at your local parts house, if it checks out replace the reg.
