I was at a garage sale Saturday and this guy had a 460 on an engine stand that he was selling. He said it came out of a 76 T-Bird with only 79,000 original miles. He was going to do a restoration but decided against it. He only wants 100.00 for it. The engine is complete with the starter, alternator and a second carb to go with it. I have plans of putting it into a 1960 F-100 and I was wondering if this is a good engine? Does anybody have the base HP on this? Can all the smog stuff be removed? Will removing the smog stuff improve the performance noticeably?
Thanks as usual for the help. There is knowledge in numbers.
I just found a site that said the HP ranges were from 208-275. Wow, that isn't much at all. What would be the easiest and cheapest way to boost the HP? Heads?
thanks
depends on your definition of cheap and easy. headers will make a big difference, porting the stock heads will too, or if you get some aftermarket aluminum itll make an even bigger difference. cam will make a huge difference. a stroker kit will make a huge difference, so what is your budget and goals?

My goal is to release the beast that is in that 460. I just want a strong running dependable engine. We don't have emissions here anymore so I know that I can get rid of all the polution junk. So I was thinking headers, intake manifold and carb. I didn't really want to get into the cams, pistons, stroker, etc.
well... the headers, intake and carb will help out a bit, as will a good aftermarket multi-keyway timing set (set straight up), but the biggest problems are the very restrictive exhaust ports on the heads, the low compression, and the very mild cam. if you were to swap heads to aftermarket aluminum trick flow streets youd basically be bolting on 50-75 horse from the increase in compression and the much better exhaust ports, in addition to the 25-30 horse youd get from the headers and timing chain... itll feel like a completely different engine
in stock form it was built for low end torque not horsepower. if you want horsepower you have to dig into the valvetrane (cam, rocker arms, valve springs, valves, retainers, etc) the 460's 250 horse feels a lot different than say a 4.6l 250 horse.

If you can find a set of D0VE heads and drop them on that block with the cam straight up it will really come alive. Ditch the Motorcrap 4300D and put either an earlier Holley pattern manifold or an aftermarket one. If you can find a 69 428 CJ 735 CFM Holley, it will really wake it up, and gets tolerable fuel economy too. What transmission are you planning on using? Be carefull on flywheel/flexplate selection, that is an internally balanced engine, the 79 up truck engines are externally balanced. Check 460ford.com for 460 information. Good luck building it!

What years did they make the DOVE heads? As for the transmission, I would like to find a 4 speed automatic, if that will work.
the dove heads were only used 2 years, 1970 and 1971. the c8ve and c9ve heads are the same. no functional difference. all 3 will raise your compression, but they all have the same crappy exhaust ports. you have to go aftermarket to get a decent exhaust port, or port the stock heads with a die grinder
as for a 4 speed auto, the only one that came behind a 460 is the e4od, but thats computer controlled. the c6 3 speed auto is the best option... its an extremely durable tranny
