First Tow

Finally got around to mounting my fifth wheel in the bed about three weeks ago. Brought the trailer out of storage yesterday morning and took it out on the highway to try it out before bringing it home. It's a 29' Wildcat which scaled 8800lbs empty when it was new and usually runs around 10,000 loaded. Just did a short trip of 20 miles each way with a 3/4 mile 6% hill along the way. Mileage way showing 12mpg one way and 11.2mpg on the return side. I reset the mileage when I turned around. It pulled the hill great as I held 65mph on the hill without putting the pedal to the floor.(was getting close though) I see why everyone raves about the factory trailer brake controller. It is far better than anything I have had in the past including my Prodigy. Looks like it is going to be a great year for camping. Going to get all the bugs out this year (if any) and next spring a couple we know with a 06 F350 6.0 and us are planning a trip down to Vegas with stops in Yellowstone etc. along the way. Works out to about 1,800 miles each way. Can't wait as it should be fun.

Looks great!
Keep an eye out for the fuzzy wuzzy's especially those in the plane vanilla types on your trip.
You'll be constantly having to back-off on go pedal throughout your trip becuase the six-oh's are their happiest at 65-70 MPH ranges no matter what your towing.

Hey Super08,

Did you do a lift on the Wildcat? Maybe it's just the picture, but the trailer body seems to be sitting higher than normal.

Just curious, since I've heard of some folks lifting their 5Vers to get it more level with the 5th wheel hitch on the 4x4 Superduties.

tnx!

Nice looking rig!

A quick question, it looks like your truck is a short bed, as is mine. Any problems with using a fifth wheel with the short bed? I'm not sure which way to go, so I figured I'd ask.

thanks

Last week on I-65 if you couldn't do 80 they would run you over . I ran 75-80 mph most of the 950 miles and got around 10 mpg. My 6.0 liked that speed and didn't down shift unless it was a big climb. 70 was the speed limit thru most of those states . The fuzzys didn't look twice at that speed .

No lift. It is actually at the lowest setting. It does have optional 16" wheels with 235/85-16 tires which are quite tall. Works out good though as it sits level with my truck and I don't have to worry about clearance problems going over high curbs and in undeveloped campgrounds.

I have a short bed. I have never had any problems, but if you had to jackknife it into a real tight spot you would have to slide the fifth wheel hitch back or it would crush the back of the cab agaist the front side of the trailer. This is not a problem as long as you stay aware of the possible contact and have a sliding hitch. As for myself I have never been into a situation where I had to slide a hitch to get the extra clearance. You can turn very sharp before having to worry about it. With the long box there is no problem like this as you can jackknife it 90 degrees without contacting.

I used to hate driving down in the U.S. years ago when I was a truck driver because of the 55mph speed limits. Took forever to get anywhere. Gotta love it now. Had a blast three years ago when we drove down to Florida in the supercharged Mustang GT I used to have. Especially in North Dakota where the limit was 75. Could drive all day around 80 and the troopers wouldn't even bat an eye at you.

When you live this far north you learn to really enjoy every bit of summer you can as it sure doesn't seem to last very long.

Beautiful set up dude! I have a short bed and have had no issues either. The TowCommand system is the best thing since sliced bread and I had a Prodigy last time also. The difference is amazing and the Prodigy is still the best 3rd-party controller on the market. Happy Trails and Best of Luck!

And yes, the Wildcat is a Forest River model. Here's the link.
