Hey guys, I have decided to buy an early bronco and am looking for any advice you can give me about what to look for when buying one. I am looking for one with a 302 and a manual trans. Other than that I don't really have a preference about it. I am not looking for show quailty, but more like a weekend driver/off-road truck. Is there anything thing I should watch for when looking for one? Are certain years better than others, or do some models come with a better drivetrain than others? Any advice would be great. Two specific questions I do have, are all early broncos 4wd? And do all manual trans have the column shifter or did some come on the floor?
The main thing to look for is rust. The common places are the floors, door pillars, inner fenders, doors, tailgate.
The from 66-71, they had Dana 30 frontends. In 71 1/2, the Dana 44 was introduced which was a much needed upgrade. All years used a couple of different versions of the 9" rear. The 77's had the most factory options, but they were also laden with a lot of smog equipment. 76 on had disc brakes with a power brake option. 1973 up had optional power steering. All models were 4wd. All of the factory manual transmissions were 3 speeds and they were all column shifted. However, it is very common to convert to a floor shifter. There are many different options available for whatever transmission you are wanting.
Because of the interchangeability, there isn't really a bad year for the Bronco. You can easily mix and match factory and aftermarket parts to build your own version.
Do some searching in this forum for more information on what options were available in different years.
