On the road again! 511 gets a test run...
I got the new C6 and high stall converter installed in the truck, which was no piece of cake. I had to fab a crossmember, modify the frame to clear the headers, modify the firewall to clear the air cleaner, modify the floorboard to clear the left cylinder head, etc... But it's pretty well done.
I tried my first test run mid-week, but two seconds after nailing the throttle I knew something was wrong. Engine was flat, just not making power, and then it blew the passenger side collector off the header. Actually sounds good with lollipop headers, but it scared the crap outta me 'cause I didn't have the inspection cover on the transmission tunnel in the cab, so it got REAL loud REAL quick. Then all the sparks flying out behind the truck where I was dragging the collector were pretty cool too. Back to the garage.
Today I finished installing a tranny temp gauge and a few other details, like tack welding the slip fit collector in place, and got ready to take it for a spin. Then I remembered that it had been running flat, and investigated a hunch. It turns out that the engine had changed position enough during the tranny install that the primary throttle blades were only opening about 2/3 and the secondaries about 1/4. After a little massaging of the throttle linkage I had full throttle again, and was ready for a run.
The run was both disappointing and exciting. The disappointing part is that it will not hook up at all, giving me a 10.04 in the 1/8 mile, which would equate to about a 15.50 second 1/4. I was doing alot of peddling to try to get it to quit spinning, but didn't have any luck. In fact, I ran about 1000 feet and shut it off. When I went back to check my tire pattern on the asphalt, it had clearly spun and/or black tracked the entire distance. The funny thing is I never thought I would complain about being able to do a 1,000 foot burn out! The exciting part is that it still gave me 82MPH in the 1/8, which is typical of about a 12.99 in the 1/4, and my tranny temp never went over 150.
From all this, I can tell I need to do my next runs in 4 wheel drive, and that the engine is making enough power to turn out some pretty impressive numbers when I get it hooked up. All in all I was pretty happy with it's inital run for being a 4x4 with big tires, and doing it all engine at 7,000 feet of altitude.
I'll be getting the 4 wheel drive functional over the next few days, and post again when I get a chance to try it out.

It's been so long since you posted. Didn't you mention driveshaft hoops before? Drive shaft hitting the floor pan is on my list of "scared the crap outta me" sounds. LOL
Good luck! Mike
Wow a 1000' Burnout.. I dont daubt you..but Vids are so cool for us to watch !! You may have read about the 434CJ build..I have to do a sleeve to #7 cyl... No biggy..It just has a spot in it about the size of a quarter that looks a little pitted..but you cant feal it ? just makes me unconfortable...
I ended up going with a Custom ground Erson Hyd.roller cam .640/651 240/248* @ .050"...Still the T-Ram and the 625cfm Demons.. KC stage II's with 2.190 int. and 1.72" exh.
I'am still debating on the stroker kit?? But Like you...I'am still hoping for 15's in the 1/4..

1000ft burnout..impressive thou not really what your after, hopefully things will hookup for ya turning all 4 tires instead of just 2
I think blowing off the collector would have scared the crap outta me, and I Really woulda freaked seeing sparks!!
We know you have a camera hope you can get some footage of the 4wd test runs
Anyway, I will start taking the front axle apart tomorrow night, and when I get it put back together I'll get some video. I'll post the videos as I shoot them, during the tuning process, and include some commentary here on the page. That way, if I screw up you'll get to see it, and get the juicy details. It might be a cool opportunity for you guys to make some suggestions also.
Here are my goals:
1.7 60'.
8.2 second 1/8 mile.
84 or better MPH 1/8 mile.
I have no idea how realistic they are, but it's a starting point.

I havent hit the scale with mine yet..as I'am still waiting on the rollpan...and I still have to do the spring pack in the rear end....I had forgotover the winterall the crap I had added to it, to carry that big **** overhead camper on it..
I was gonna have MW make 5 stud axles for it..But then I dont know anyone that makes 5 lug rotor's that will fit the caliper's ?
If it aint one thing its 3...LOL......
Bud if mine runs half as good ...I'll be tickled Chitless..

Once I get a weight, I can plug that number in my Gtech (not Gtex) meter and it will tell me the HP to the ground. If all goes well maybe I can have it running again this weekend. Fingers crossed. I'm really jonesin' to feel it pull.

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Sounds like you've got your hands full

IS IT more efficient to run in 4wd for traction, or 2wd with enough tire to hook-up?
I wonder which is better... I'd imagine 4wd would loose SOME power, but if you can't get it to the ground, what's the use?
It would probably be possible to modify the suspension to plant more weight on the rear tires. Maybe some lighter springs, and different mounting point for my no-hop bars. But that'll have to wait.

Someone..I'am trying to remember who ? makes a 35" tall slick... the tallest I had seen before were 33" tall..
Brian..remember that bud of mine that runs that 5000lb Bronco...He's running 10's..he still has the 4wd front axle in the truck....just took out the shaft...runs skinnies on the front and 33x16x15 on the back...He's installing wheelie bars as we speak....Pat even runs his KC highlights on the Push guard when he makes a pass, so that everone knows its an offroader !! LOL

Anyway, that has been one of my concerns, and I've been curious to see what it does.

We had a local guy bring his mudd'r to the strip one day. bolted a set of 14/32's on the back and lay down a low 12 sec pass. He had a 514 in it(or something close to it). They promptly told him to pack it up cause he left a trail of mud all the way down the track!! LOL!! It sure impressed the heck outta me.
Russ, I'm sure we can "modify" something to fit them rotors on.
