Got a 1988 Bronco II that will start and run fine for about 30-35 minutes then it starts cutting out and stalls. After it stalls it sometimes start again but will not stay running and most of the time will not start again. After sitting for a few hours it will start up and run fine again for about 30-35 minutes and the whole problem starts again. I replaced the fuel filter with no change to the problem. Help please!
Not really sure how to check it but it sounds like something in the distributor. I had the same problem, when it gets hot it quits working. I'm sure someone else has some better advise tho.
I have been having the same problem and replaced the TFI and the internals to the Distributor and nothing worked so let me know if you get a better responce........
I used to have an issue on a John Deere 110 where the coil would get hot and stop working after awhile. Granted the coil isn't mounted that close to the engine on a Bronco, I bet it puts out a good little bit of heat all by itself. My guess is if your TFI module and your pickup module checks out, the next place I'd check is that coil.
Somewhere I found resistance values of the primary and secondary windings. If they were out of spec, the coil was bad. I'll have to see if I can find those again. That's what I used to determine the coil in my 87 B2 was bad.
This is what I found in regards to testing the resistance on a coil from the Autozone Repair Information. Hopefully I can post the link and it will be of some help to you.
it sounds to me that your ignition coil is breaking down when it gets hot..once it cools down it will run until it gets hot again..that is a very common symptom of a failing coil
I noticed my relays are warmer then i would like, if everything else has failed, check the relays and see how hot they are.
Double check the connector for the coil, it can go bad and once hot, the expansion causes a break in the individual connector pieces. Especially in a salt state.
When it will not start, try wiggling the wires at the TFI.
