Oil filter threads

Did an oil change on my '98 4.0L today. I unscrewed the old filter, and reached up to wipe some old oil off the filter mount. When I did, I by chance noticed that the threaded piece that the filter screws onto was pretty loose. I threaded it back in, put the filter on, and everything seemed fine. Is it normal for that to be loose? I thought it would have been solidly in there.

no it's not normal although I have seen a few come out when removing an oil filter (all 3times it was a fram filter go figure) I always figured the filters threads were a little bit rough or not cut just right and gripped enough to loosen it from the block. I would put a wrench on it or take it out, clean up the threads and put some locktite on them before rethreading it back on. now I have never seen one fall off when the filter is on my guess is that it acts a little like a lock nut and basically jams it.

You could use another filter as a guide to find a couple of nuts with the same thread size, double nut the tube, a little locktite like Monsterbaby suggested and tighten her on there.

that happened on my old F250 once it never came out when the filter was on but it did come loose. I just tightened it up and it was fine
