Tranny troubles or something else?
I need some help please. As I wait patiently (7 weeks so far) for my 2008 to arrive my 05 F350 has decided to start acting up.
Under heavy load, going uphill, tow haul on or off, there seems to be a strange vibration on the gas pedal. There is also a bit of an odor. I can't pin down the smell.
Reverse seems a bit lazy too when backing up with the trailer. Without the trailer, no symptoms.
Any help would be appreciated, I called Ford and they told me to bring it in... I got no help whatsoever over the phone. I stayed home from work today for fear of blowing something up. I can't go to work without the trailer and FORD has no courtesy trucks available for 1.5 weeks.
You could try a hard boot (battery disconnect with lights on, wait five minutes and hook back up and drive.)
This would force the computer to relearn and tranny to relearn shift points. Drive for a while without the trialer and then add the trailer and take it through paces. If you are pulling it should be in T/H all the time. It will take a while of learning but the shifts under load with get smoother as it learns. At first it will shift a bit hard and then get better. Does your problem go away? Are you having trouble shifting into reverse, does it happen slower than before? For anything a problem, should be warrenty still? But I would hang on and trade her in, say it went away :-) that way you dont loose your work truck and get your new one and trade in. Remember the new one has break in so no towing for 500 miles?
If you 05 is still under warrenty and will when you trade, just drive it hard and make it work so long as the tranny isnt burning fluid or overheating....

The bumper to bumper warranty is toast. I am at 80,000k. The engine is covered up to 100k I think. The new truck should be here soon, another 4 weeks???, it was ordered on March 20.
I checked the tranny fluid level, it's good. Had a flush done 2 months ago at Ford as well.
The reverse is a bit lazy but only when the trailer is connected.
I just drove it around without the trailer and everything is normal. Tranny shifts fine, no smells. No trouble going up steep grades either.
On the 08's... no towing for 500 miles???
I will have to drive the crap out of it the first weekend? That is probably not a good idea either.

Right on both counts. No manufacturer recommends any towing or hard driving for at least the 1st 500 miles. It was the same with your '05.

I got the trailer about 3 months after the I got the 05... I had already logged some miles on it so I was good to go.
Thanks for the advice.
