Is there any way to tell how many spline my rearend is with out actualy tearing it apart and counting? Ive got a 79' F150 2wd with the 351M auto, but the truck was originaly a 302.Thanks In advance.
theres a good chance that it is a 31 spline, but you never know. Its not that hard just pull the wheel and pull all the brake components and 4 bolts that hold the axle to the tube with a retainer bracket and it will slide out. It would be a good time to check axle bearings grease and brakes while your at it also!
All V8 9" ers in trucks that I have seen are 31 spline. 6cyl got 28 splines.
Both my 77 F100 with a 302 and my 77 F150 351M originally have 31 splines.
I bought a 78 F150 300 I6 to swap beds on my F150 and it has 28 splines.
First 31 spline 9 inch axle shaft = 1968. They were optional on all 68/72 F100's except the F100 Camper Specials. Both 28 and 31 splines were available 1973/79.
