extra fuel tank

I have a 93 F250 with twin tanks. I would like to add another tank in the bed ahead of the gang box. Probably 50 gallon. I thought I would plumb it to the same line that runs from the rear tank to the selector valve thereby drawing from the rear tank and the auxiliary tank. I am on a limited budget so I can't afford one of those setups with the digital display and all. Anyone have any suggestions as to a reasonably priced tank and the pros and cons of this setup. Thanks. Tom

Since the tanks are at such different levels, the fuel will not draw out of both.
Once the siphon starts, the top tank will drain into the lower tank which will overflow.

you also have to concern yourself with the return lines. you have to make sure you are returning the unused fuel to the same tank or else you could have overflow.

without getting to fancy or expensive., a few (4) ball valves installed in the correct locations could solve this problem. but switching would be manual, turning 2 on and 2 off.

then there is the question of fuel level reading on your dash gauge in the added tank. again, manual toggle switches could solve this.

if you were willing to disconnect and not use your rear tank when you added the new 50 gal, that would make switching simplier.

As far as overflowing,I saw in Northern Tool and Equipment they had some sort of Install kit that prevents overflowing. It feeds from top tank through fill pipe as needed (Item#3490901-2701). That would seem to keep it simple. Now if I can find a tank to fit in front of my gang box that is not higher that bed rails. Comments??

install kit is ok but as long as cap is on if you remove cap as long as it is filling the you have a mess works off a purge valve

Thanks for that info. I didn't know that. Almost bought one. Why is it that some tanks listed are fuel transfer and can't be connected to fuel system? I suppose I could get a transfer tank and just pump the fuel into my main tank from the tank in the bed as needed. What do you think. I was thinking of something similar to the Delta #486000 or an Ellsworth the same size to put IN FRONT of my gang box.

See if you can find a right side mounted frame rail tank. Ford did offer them on 350's in the 80's. I don't know why they did but they did.

i have a 100 gallon transfer flow tank on my truck and have looked at how it was set up. you will need to get another selector valve like the factory one, i have seen these at napa and autozone. most parts stores should have them or you could get one from the dealer. mine is installed about 6" in front of the factory selector valve. you splice the factory lines onto one side of the selector valve and the auxillary tank onto the other side. you will need two lines from the tank, one for the fuel pickup and on for the fuel return. mount a toggle switch on the dash and run your electrical to the switch. when you have it switched to the main tanks, the tanks work the same way as they do now. when you switch to auxillary it will draw fuel from the other side of the selector valve. if the auxillary tank has a fuel gauge you can wire that in also, main tanks to one side of selector valve and the auxillary tank to the other side of the selector valve. i haven't bought a selector valve recently, but if i remember right they were about $35.00 5 years ago.

Or go with the Bronco 38 galllon rear tank mod. You need one from an EFI, it'll have the return.

I noticed the tanks that are designed to connect to the system are a lot pricier than the tanks used to STORE fuel in the truck bed for transfer to a piece of machinery. I thought I could install a STORAGE tank in the bed (in front of the gang box) and just pump the fuel out to my rear or main tank through the fill pipe as needed (using a hand pump stuck in the fill hole of the storage tank Maybe a 12 volt pump would keep it from being so messy with a hand pump. That would keep it pretty simple. What do you think?

that should be the easiest and cheapest way to do it. no pumbing, wiring, or drilling holes in the bed.

plus, if you ever want to move the new tank to another truck.

i would put a filter in the hose somewhere. in this type of setup, there will always be a bit of fuel/trash/water that sits in the bottom.

Anyone know where I can find one approx 60"w x 9-12"D x 19"H. The 19" high is max so it wont stick up. I prefer steel. More reasonable priced. I'm looking for approx 50 gallon. Thanks for your help.

I had this set-up in an F-150 gasser to fuel equipment (and yes, I did fuel the truck with it a couple of times.) My nozzle was not automatiic so I had to pay attention to avoid overflow. I had an electric pump and the whole set-up came from Northern. the tank was steel and was L-shaped. It fit under and in front of a standard bed-width tool box. It did, however, come a few inches above the bed sides (not sure how important that is to you) it also had about 100 gallon or better capacity
As far as connecting it to the truck is concerned, I have seen temporary installations in aircraft that had the reserve tank empty into the main fuel feed to the engine from the factory tank. this would not only feed the engine but would back-flow into the original tank to fill it (by gravity). You just watched the factory gauge for that tank to avoid overfill. You wouldn't want to walk away while the aux tank re-filled the factory tank, but a solenoid valve connected to the accessory side of the ignition switch could take care of that.
