Automatic Transfer Case w/no Computer

I have a 2000 model x-fer case that I am putting in a project vehicle but I am using a computer and 4.6 from a Crown Vic so it has no provisions for automatic shift. Anyone ever made one operational without it ? Wiring diagrams and stuff would be useful. I would appreciate any help. Many thanks

Hello Dave and Welcome to the forum!

Your project is interesting. Do I understand you correctly that you are mating 2000 transfer case to a computer and a 4.6 from a CV? I don't think the computer will care so long as you are able wire it so that you have 4X4 when you need it.

You haven't really given enough info on what your doing.
Is this 4x4? If yes, it is shift on the fly? etc.
There is a lot to understand about how all that works before you even start.
There is more than just the computer involved, in truck use.
To get around some of it would requie some major re-engineering of control operations.
There is 4 high, 4 low, front drive engagement etc.

Yea its four wheel drive and the xfer case is 'shift on the fly' which the computer normally controls, but of course my computer will not do. I would like to just know how the computer normally works the case so I can 'rig' it to work without the computer.

If I'm not mistaken, and please correct me if I am wrong, the PCM controls the engine. The Generic Electronics Module (GEM) controls the shift on the fly relays, etc. There is communication between the PCM and the GEM but the GEM does most of it.

Dave, get a CD copy of Ford's service disc for the year you intend to use.
If your good at circuitry and can relate the operational discription to the hardware, I think you may be able to pull it off.
Some examples of what you need to address is the switch signal that begin the sequence of operation to concluson and in the reverse.
The 4L operation requireing the vehichle to be at a stop and the brake applied and transmission in neutral, etc.
Learn what the motor does inside the transfer case for each function and how it signals these actions and the vacuum output shaft driver and it's relay controls.
Even the old Bronco II and Rangers have a controller for there shift on the fly operation (touch control) and uses the same type motor drive on the transfer case..
Good luck.

Thanks for the insight Bluegrass, what I am building actually is a Bronco II but it was a manual shift case but I think I have a ranger with shift on the fly, maybe I can snag the controller out of it and make it work. I was hoping someone on here had a wiring diagram for the 2000 case and its operation.

I have both a Ranger and a Bronco II with touch control.
The controllers between them are the same 86 and 88.
The engine computers are different.
Between them, one engine has no EGR function, one has no vss speed sensor etc.
The Haynes book on this year range has drawings but they are nearly impossible to work with and require a lot of effort to put the circuits togather the way they are presented in the book.
I went thru this once trying to figure out an intermittant 4wd problem and turned out to be a bad connector that plugs onto the controller board. They go hard with age and break apart.
So you have a lot to figure out.
As said before, study the new transfer case operation and requirements you are trying to work with before you spend any more on the project because it just may be to big to accomplish without large efforts in the money and patience department.
I'm sure you can get it to work with manuel control but auto control is an engineering feat to bring all the functions togather in the correct timing and function reporting.

I'm crazy like and have always done things no one else does in a home shop but even this wouldn't be one of them.
Done conversions for carb to full fuel injection, conversion to Megasquirt fuel injection, built a Factroy Five Cobra, 3 supercharger installations, built the Ford alky motor to run a sprint car, ported many sets of heads and the list goes on over the years
Poor 86 Ranger now sets with a lot of rust on her. But what to do? Thinking of finding a good box and bringing her back to usefullness again some time. Motor still runs good, trans front seal leaks bad, exhaust bad etc.
Today, I fix and recharge the A/C in the Bronco II.

Good luck with your project..

I have a 2006 E350 van with a 5.4L that I just added axles from a 2006 F-350 and a transfer case from a 2001 F-150. I wanted the electronic controller also. You will need the Gem module, a clutch relay (any relay will work for this) , the shift relay, the 4x4 mode selector switch and the vacume solenoid for the front hubs. The 2001 Gem module controls other items like windows, doors, ect.. I am using the 2001 Gem module for 4x4 operations only. I have the wiring diagrams if you want.
