I'm not to savvy on what can mate up in a truck.. Can you put a V8 from a car in one of these mid-fifty trucks? For example, a 59 T-bird 352 and matching V8, etc. Or a 68 429 out of a T-bird. As long as the engine & tranny match, does it matter?
Doesn't really matter, but lighter might be better, as well as easy, cheap and already a decent runner, which would be a 302/automatic set up out of a Mustang, a fairly common swap in these trucks methinks.
I am running a 460 cuin with a C6 trans that came out of a 71 Lincoln. These engines are torque monsters and last forever. I see them for sale all the time in SoCal, I guess gas is too expensive here for some folks.
Pretty well any common pre later 90`s Ford engine, six or V8, can be used and engine/trans mounting kits are common.
Usually it works out best and the cheapest if you can buy a complete donor vehicle, it helps with obtaining most of the parts needed for the swap.
I've got a 302/C4 in the truck now.. but its too weak for me. Its a 1972.. castrated engine.. only about 150 HP. I'm wanting to put a 351 or better in it with a C6.
Also I need to rebuild the DANA 60 with higher gears.. im thinking mine is in the high 4s, which makes the 302 seem even worse.
These things have enormous engine compartments. Nearly anything will fit with the right mounts. However, a 302 should be great...are you sure everything's OK with it? Why not just rebuild that one? Probably be easier and cheaper. And unless you're building some beast in the HP department, the C4 should be OK, too.
