Grinding/ Rattling front end
I have a 95 F150 4x4 with the dana 44 front end I believe, maybe it is the 50. I have been getting a rattling in the front end lately and it is starting to get worse. The nuts in the hubs are tight and in correctly because I did my balljoints recently. When I apply the brakes the grinding/rattling goes away. The front brakes are about due, so I think I am going to do them and get some new antirattle clips too because they are worn out. I am not sure what is making this noise. Has anyone else had this problem before, and if so how did you fix it? Should I recheck the bearings in the hub as well?

Could be a number of things. I assume when you did the ball joints you checked the axle shaft universal joints? It could also be, as you suggest, worn pads and anti-rattle springs. Another possibility is that the rotors are rubbing on the dirt sheilds. Check that the sheilds are not distorted and bend as necessary. also recheck wheel bearings to ensure that the rotors are not moving slightly and touching the dirt sheilds.

I replaced the brake pads and the antirattle clips and the problem is completely fixed. When I pulled the old pads off the antirattle clips were really bad. That must have been the problem.
