I have a 1978 351W with what is called a Distributor Modulator Valve that works in conjunction with my Dura Spark II with Dual Mode timing.
My question is the wires pulled out of the vacuum valve before I got the vehicle and i dont know where the wires go. Cant find a new part and cant find wiring diagrams.
Part Number is D8AE-12A265-DA. Has 3 wires. a yellow wire that hooks up to the Valve, and a Black w/White stripe and a brown wire that runs to a red ballast resistor on the other side of this resistor is just the black w/ white stripe wire which hooks up to the part. I have a 50/50 chance of getting it hooked up right but I want to get it right the first time. On the bottom of the part where the wires hook up at theres three post numbered 1, 2, and 3. 1 and 2 are closely side by side and 3 is spaced alittle further away. # 1 has no metal connector, #2 has one and # 3 has one.
Where dose the Yellow Wire go? and where dose the black with white stripe go?
Umm no its not, it has a vacuum hook up and sits on the driverside fender skirt. It dosent operate off temperature it operates off engine vacuum and senses engine load to adjust the timing based off load. Even my factory repair manual says its called a Distributor Modulator Valve.
(taken from Engine Repair manual 1978)
Dual Mode Timing Ignition module : On some applications, a special Dura Spark II ignition module is used, with altitude compensation and economy features. This special module, plus the altitude sensor or deconomy distributor modulator, allows the base engine time to be modified to suit either altitude or engine load conditions. All other elements and performance characteristics of this module are idnetical to both modes of operation of other Dura Spark II systems. All Dura Spark II modules equipped with altitude feature have three connectors instead of the normal two.
Economy Calibrations : A vacuum switch sensing intake manifold vacuum provides an automatic retard signal to the distributor under heavy engine load, while allowing spark advance under light to moderate engine loads.
In the figure for the same part the book says Distributor Modulator Valve 12A182 (Economy Calibration)
There is another two numbers on the part. One that is right below the number i posted in my first post is 175-575 and the other is at the top of the bracket near the nipple for the vacuum hose and it says 39 8
I know the part number isnt going to be found. I called the ford dealership up and they told me they have no record of the part or knew what it was or what it did. But I have the part and the numbers are on the part.
This isnt a truck though the engine is in a car but this is a part for the engine which is interchangeable not the car itself.
I found a 1974 part it looks simmilar to this but that isnt interchange able with 78 and there were many different models made thats what my shop manual says.

I'll look some more, and I knew that the 351W wasn't in an F Series...but Econolines used it from 1975, and that part will prolly be on the E-van 351W also.
I got the car for $500 and if it was too much to fix i was going to pull the engine and put it in my 82 f150 and swap the 302 out. But i ended up getting a steal this is the only thing that is wrong with it and ive been looking online since oct 2005 trying to find a diagram to repair this.
I know the part number isnt going to be found. WANNA BET? I called the ford dealership up and they told me they have no record of the part or knew what it was or what it did. So what else is new? Most of the "so called" partsmen today couldn't find their azz with both hands. But I have the part and the numbers are on the part.
Correct number D2AZ-12A170-B is listed above in posts 8 and 9.

lol Im sure I could have got them to find the part if I wanted to sit around and wait and have them keep looking
Don't count on it, it took two phone calls today to run down one part number (a carb kit) for a member here. The dealer was clueless...totally clueless, and told the member they didn't sell Motorcraft parts and/or carb kits! WTF??
It did take me some time to find the correct part and locate one....around 5 minutes total.

Oh im sure it takes time. The engine runs great even though this part isnt there. I dont really need it but I wanted to get it fixed maybe i could get alittle more miliage out of it.
