What size speakers?

Does anybody know what size the stock speakers are in a 1990 XLT? I have four speakers, two in the doors and two on the sides of the back seat. The back speakers look like 6X9's, but I'm not sure. I'd like to know the sizes so I can buy new speakers before taking the panels off. Thanks

6 1/2" speakers in the doors, 6" X 8" speakers in the rear, according to Crutchfield. I don't see why 6" X 9"'s wouldn't work with minor trimming, if any was needed at all......

The front are 6.5" speakers and the back are a 6x8" or 5x7 both are very similiar. 6x9 speakers will not fit in the same mounts that the stocks are in. You will need to put a 6x9 spacer in there to mount them to the body side panel. Don't get a speaker that is too deep or it will cause the panel to bulge out. and the grille to not fit very well.

I'm not looking for that gangsta bass, just some speakers that will sound better than stock and fit in behind the door panels. I upgraded to a cd player with 40 watts per channel, actually the stock speakers don't sound too bad but I'm sure they could sound better. I blew out my eardums as a teenager from going to Ted Nugent concerts and the like! I just want something that sounds good now. Don't need a subwoofer, would rather get a lift kit. I've never tried to buy a 6X8" speaker, but I suppose somebody makes some decent ones.

Just to name a few brands off hand that I know will work for your size. Kicker, Infinity, Pioneer and Eclispe. I personally have the Eclipse in my Bronco. They sound pretty good but need more power than a head unit provides. The Infinity and Pioneers should work the best with a H.U. power.
