Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and this is my first post. Last week I bought a 1999 F250 Lariat SD 4X4 V10 4SPD automatic with O/D showing 48,XXX miles . The truck runs like a champ but i fell the mileage in city under 2000rpms should be better than 9.5-10.3! Yesterday I tried turning the O/D off at the shifter and didn't notice any change. I did it again later that day and this morning on the way to word and it remains at 1500rpms going 38mph or so. This isn't stop and go since the lights are timed and travel constant down to the river. I also have a ticking noise coming from the Torque converter area when I'm on an incline, sometimes in park, or pulling up to a red light. Could my O/D be defective? Am I not going fast enough for it to engage? Could my torque converter be acting up? Any help would be appreciated.
p.s. My wife has a 98 5.4 Expo with O/D and hers cuts off and on.
Not going fast enough..... try turning the OD off when going 65-70 mph, then you'll notice the RPM's jump up as the truck downshifts to 4th... that is, unless something is wrong with the tranny.
You guys are right. I got up to 40mph at lunchtime and it shifted into O/D! I guess 10.3 is all I get. BTW, I was traveling @ 40mph with my rpms at 1300 or so. Can anyone tell what my gear ratio may be? I was guessing 4.?? because of the gas mileage and if it is, want to go down to 3.73 since i don't tow or put many miles on a car (less that 10K) a year. Could a gear change bump me up a couple mpg? Thanks for fast reply guys.
With stock tires, 70mph will put you at 2000 rpms or so with 373's, 2250-2300 rpms with 430's.... you'll get minimal mpgs from a gear swap, on top of the fact that they are pricey to begin with. The best way to watch mpg is to keep your foot out of it, which I know is hard... but these things do enjoy gas, not too much we can do about it.

My 04' will shift into OD at a little over 40. With 3:73s and stock 32" tires you will be turning a hair under 2000 rpm at 70mph. You probally won't see any difference between 4:30 and 3:73 except on the highway, the 3:73 will give better mpg. Around town you may get slightly better mpg with a 4:30 rear. You have a big truck poor mpg is part of it.
