When I was shopping for a F-450 I was considering a V-10 but at 6mpg the truck is unaffordable to drive. The 6.0 F-450 I bought gets 12mpg loaded or empty and has lots of power.

Once you go to diesel you never go back to gas I won't go back to gas I went to diesel 6 years ago. I had trucks with 460 gas power they used to burn a easy 10 dollars per hour in fuel unloaded and up to 12 or more loaded. That was back when gas was cheap around 1.92 a gallon. At todays price 3.86 a gallon and diesel right now is 3.46 a gallon. I converted CND prices to US funds.

For me to run 100 miles with the 6.0 $28.83 in diesel with a V-10 $64.33 say you run 1000 miles month the PSD is 288.33 the V-10 643.33. In one year the V-10 has guzzeled back 7719.00 in gas and the diesel 3459.00 with a 4260 difference keep the truck 5 years you save around 21,300 in fuel.

A V-10 might be okay for a P/U truck but in a F-450 F-550 a diesel is a must you will go broke running a V-10 powered truck. At 6mpg that is giving the V-10 some credit I have heard them dipping down to 4mpg. At 4 mpg to travel 100 miles is going to cost you 96.50 in gas. I charge 50 dollars per hour with my truck that would leave me with 28 dollars for the 100 mile trip after fuel expenses. The PSD would be 96 dollars in profit I calculated it out my PSD will cost me 12 dollars CND per hour in fuel a V-10 at 6mpg would be 28.50 per hour.

If I went and ordered a brandnew the 6.4 diesel option is 8570 dollars CND with the 6spd manual if I wanted the T shift thats a extra 1935 dollars. I don't know what the fuel mileage on the 6.4 is going to be like. The V-10s fuel mileage never changes it is still a pig on fuel.

If you are trying to justify buying gas, does that mean you understand that you made the wrong choice

no not at all I just wish people would be more confident in their descisions! the SuperDuty gas or diesel is by far the best truck in the buisness bar none & no one should feel bad abought their purchase if it fits their lifestyle mine fits diesel cus I am straight! sglylx1 fits gas cus .... well he likes chicks! (I am just kidding no letter bombs please) I just think this back & forth abought cost of this & resale of that amoritized over the Libor index on the third tuesday at noon GMT is not the reason we all bought these trucks witch, as my wife knows, was to ease the pain of having a very small *****!

I have done the math also. It made sense to me to go diesel again. I paid $4335.00 for the 6.0 psd option. So for me your math did not add up. I think it would be different for everyone. Depends on how many miles are driven, if you tow, how the truck is generally used and how long you plan on keeping it. But the biggest of all is, Do you like the smell of diesel in the morning?

It all comes down to what you want... I tow 7k-15k lbs. regularly 3-7 times a month anywhere from 2000-3000 miles towing/month. I also abuse it off road and on the road. I beat the tar out of my truck and drive it like I hate it and want it to die... but it never does. I paid $34,900 for my gasjob and it was the best decision for me, including towing extremely heavy duty, many times a month. To each man his own! And if we are all making up for our shortcomings by owning big trucks, then so be it! It ain't about the size of the wave, it's all in the motion of the ocean anyways!

It all depends on what you are using the truck for. I know guys that have V-10 powered F-450 trucks but they don't use them everyday which is why they bought a truck with a V-10. When they do use the truck it costs them 100 dollars in gas which costs me half the price in fuel to-do but their truck gets used maybe twice a month.

You can do all the number crunching you want if you want a diesel you buy a diesel. When I was looking for used trucks the price difference between V-10 and 6.0 diesel trucks was maybe at most 4 grand different with the same mileage. I paid 30 grand for my 03 PSD F-450 2wd a month and a half ago a 07 PSD with the same specs was 60 grand. A V-10 truck was only 7 grand cheaper buying new I priced one out.

Pulling 6 to 10% grades with a V-10 is very expensive I see the rental motorhomes all summer on E350 Chassis see them climbing the grades and the gas tank turning inside out.

As much as I hate this 'argument', I hate poor mathematical comparisons even worse.

I just went to Ford.com and saw that the V10 is a $600.00 option while the PSD is a $6,895.00 option.

Comparisons should really be apples to apples. Only use the retail cost difference between the two engines ($6,295.00) in your calculations.

Now this 'argument' doesn't work the same for everyone based on fuel costs. I'd drive a PSD if diesel wasn't .52 more per gallon here.

The same advice applies now as I and many others have said for years. Buy one of each, sell the one you drive the LEAST.

I bought the v10 because the dealers coffee tastes like poo and I figured as much time as a 6.0 spends in the shop I would be drinking a lot of it

Just trying to add fuel to the fire. I always said if I towed heavy, ran in the mountains or drove more the 20K or so a year I would have gotten the PSD but for me it just did not add up.

Check the V10 forum now and then and you'd probably be surprised how many people bought the V10 AFTER having a diesel.

I have one of each-a 250 v-10 with standard tranny and and f 350 7.3 auto. the v 10 gets 13.6 mpg and the 7.3 gets 13.2. with diesel selling at .30 a gallon more than gas and the engine option is 4000.00 more for the diesel -- then you do the math on which is cheaper to own. plus the v10 will pull with the diesel- a fact i attribute to the v10 having a standard tranny

I know that some guys heads are going to explode because of the post above... there will be a lot of denial... probably some rioting from the diesel crowd. There is no possible way (is there now?) on earth a v-10 could hang with a diesel or get better gas mileage... hehehe! I hope you are prepared for the can that you have just opened....
