Bought an 88 Eddie Bauer from a mechanic friend of mine several months ago, after my Grand Cherokee was totalled. Love the truck, alot of room. She has 252,000 miles on her, original 5.0 original AOD with a shift kit. She runs good, no slippage in the transmission. I have a coolant leak from my intake manifold gasket, but thats no big deal. She is getting 12 miles to a gallon, burns about a quart every 700 miles. Just how long will one of these 302/AOD combinations last? I notice it has decent power around town, but on the road its weak, and going up steep hills she drops down to about 40 mph. My buddy says that as long as its running good don't change the engine out. Anyone else got an original with more miles than this? Lastly she has 31X10 on now, I notice that on the inside rod its worn clean from the tire rubbing. The archived posts say that you put on 32x11.50s, but wouldn't this rub even more? Thanks.
I got 198000 miles on my 302 bronco wth the original carb. That hasnever been rebuilt. It is smoking a little bit now. Rings are worn. But she still runs strong. Although it leaks oil and does not ide good when warmed up it is irratic and tends to want to stall out at lights. But onceu get going. NO PROBLEMS.. My Bronco has never left me stranded anjd I am the original owner. Dam good truck!!
My 90 302 is doing the same thing, but maybe not as strong in the city as yours and only getting about 10MPG or so. It just doesn't seem to have the oomf you should get right? I am searching for the same answer.....ANYONE...is it the fuel pump or injectors? Have done a full tune up and can't trace this loss of power down.
I couldn't tell you if your injectors are clogged or not, but I CAN tell you this for sure: if they are, and you go to the auto parts store and buy one of the heavy duty injector cleaners that cost about 8 bucks, it will make a HUGE difference. This is one of those miracle cures in a can that actually works. Use the expensive injector cleaner the first time, and then use STP concentrated injector cleaner (comes in a black bottle, costs about $2.50) every 3,000 miles or so and your injectors will stay nice and clean.
