Hi guys im new to the forum and to the wide world of diesels. I just bought a 99 f350 4dr dually, 2wd with the 7.3. My first tank of fuel i averaged 13.5 mpg. Not exactlly what i thought it was gonna get. So ive been researching mods for improving mpg, and have been reading the forums to see what you guys are doing to your rigs. Im sold on the afe stage 2 kit with the pro guard, but im a little lost on the intake tube. Do they want you to use the exsisting intake tube on the truck? I would like to replace it but im having a hard time finding one on the net. Im also looking for exhaust and a good chip, if anyone has any recommendations. I dont really pull alot but i have a large slide in camper and a aluminum boat i pull. Really just looking for the max mpg i can get. Thanks in advance

So I am also looking to improve my air intake but am confused as which is the best option for your fresh air intake. I read another post somewhere about redirecting the fresh air in thru the oval port in the drriver side fender wall, I think they used that in 1999 vs around the battery box from the front. It seems to me that a diesel needs alot of fresh air and the opening coming around the battery from the front is small and restrctive. Am I missing something here? Thanks 250truckguy
That opening is small and restrictive and modifying that is called the zoodad mod. You just use a dremel tool or something similar to open up the hole.
I you don't mind not having the shield around the filter, I built my own homemade AFE intake for half the price. I even have an AFE prefilter on it (not in the picture):
