should i re-gear

I have a 1977 Ford 150 351M with a C-6 tranny.Its part-time 4x4.It has 33s,and it takes a while to get to speed.I'm suspecting the gears are a little to steep(3.50 or whatever came in it).Should i go into higher gears.I been thinking about mabye 4.10 gears.

Thanks

the easy way to tell what gears you have is to jack up the rear end, and mark the tire and body, and the drive shaft. then turn the drive shaft over until the tire turns once. If you get 3 1/2 turns = about 3.54s, 3 3/4= 3.73s ect. I would regear if you have the change, and throw in a locker or posi while you have it apart.
Hope this helps!

Yes do it!
I went from 3.55s to 4.10s and love it.

4:56s will make up for that little motor, and it would be great if you ever go to a 35 inch tire. 3:55 to 4:11 really isnt do anything

dumb but similiar question...

My truck has gobs and gobs of torque...more than I ever use. Assuming that I've got 4.10's in it, wouldn't lowering the gear ratio to say, 3.54 reduce torque but increase high rpm mileage?

If your running the stock size tiers then yes it would help with high RPM mileage.

tcbofade- Yes, dropping your gear ratio will definately decrease rear-wheel torque and increase MPG (usually).

IF you feel comfortable droping $1,200 in gears front and rear, then yeah, 4.10 gears would be a good upgrade.
3.50s are good for 31s
3.73s are good for 33s
4.10s are good for 35s
but in your case, don't even worry about moveing up that little bit, just go to 4.10

IF you have stock tires and 3.50 gears, your hwy RPMs will be lower(which gives you more mpg), but it will take alittle more gas/power to get your truck up to hwy speeds, useing more gas than usual, and not getting much out of the gear change.

I dont mean to hi-jack your thread, but I have a similar question, if you dont mind...
I have a 390 in mine, with 35" tires and 3.50 gears, full time t-case. I have way too much torque as it is, the back tires break loose and want to take off from every stop light, even tho its locked front and rear.. It runs at 2k RPM around 60mph, and im getting 12-15mpg. Should I just consider myself lucky and not ask why??

Again, sorry for the hi-jack.

Ooops...I meant to say, "Good for you!"

I get 10 mpg on a GOOD day. Normal is 8.5 or so...

Your as lucky as can be.
I had 3.50 gear w/ 37s and I got about 8 mpg
I changed to 4.56 gears and and got about 13-14(if I take it easy, which I never do).

I have 33's with 4.56 gears, and the best I could manage before the camper was installed was 10.9 mpg and that was on the highway.
