Hey guys..
Can anyone recommend a good set of tires for my 04 lariat? It will be mostly driven on road, but I like having the capability to go off if I need too.. So nothing too agressive, and nothing too "passenger tire"...
Any suggestions?
Oh, and I'm keeping my stock 18" rims.
I have an 04 Screw lariat 2wd that had BFG long trails. They wore out at about 36K and I put Hankooks on. Sure wish I hadn't. They are good in the rain but suck in the snow and do not bite on anything but pavement. I wish I had the cash to go back to BFG. If you have 18" rims you may have a little difficulty finding choices. I bought mine back in November and had a choice of 3 different tires.
My 18" rugged trail BFG's are darn near new, with 11,000 miles on them. Good tires if you are using your truck as an SUV. But if you plan to use your truck as a truck, and pull with it, or put something in the bed and haul with it, then the wimpy P-metric tires supplied by Ford will not do the job. I have found out that good E rated tires for 18" rims for the F-150 will cost around $1200. Ford f* us again with their sad tires. F-150's should never be set out with passenger car tires. This is just wrong, and perhaps dangerous.
Would you put your family in peril towing or hauling with inferior tires?
Ford will.
For what it sounds like you need, here are the tires I would consider. Dueler A/T REVO, BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO (285-65-18 E load), Goodyear Wrangler AT/S
I have the BFG AT T/A KO's on my truck and love them. There is no such thing a a good cheap tire in 18in for this truck. Run don't walk away from the BFG Rugged Trail T/A, it can't handle the weight of these trucks.
Me and a co-worker both run the BFG TA KO's on our trucks. They seem to handle well, fairly rugged, good tread wear, and still give good grip offroad, snow, mud, etc. The downside is we like them so well, we keep going back to them, so haven't really tried too much else.
There have been several times I have thought "I'm never going to make it through that... (insert snow, mud, whatever)...but the BFG's pretty much walked right through it.
