Have a problem, maybe someone here can help

I have a 1997 F150 with 5.4 V8. Almost annually the number 4 COP starts misfiring and needs to be replaced. Well today I went to do it and the dang COP came apart, only the boot left in the block. I tried to pull it with pliers and the boot kept ripping. This is the one on passenger side all the way back.

Any Idea what the service dept at the dealer will have to do to get it out? I was ready to take a sledge hammer to the truck this evening.

I am guessing your heater core lines are leaking onto it, to pull it they will have to use some long needle nose pliers and get as much of the boot out as possible then pull the plug.

I agree. It sounds like your heater hose is leaking. I had that same cop go bad because of the heater hose leaking. It was such a small leak I never noticed it till the cop failed. I put a new clamp on the hose & haven't had another cop go bad

I was able to get it out. I used a Lag Screw and torqued it inside the boot and was able to pull it out.

Anyway, I am stll having sputtering problems, which is why I was replacing the COP. I guess it was not #4 COP. It has been sputtering some for about a week and a half with no check engine light so no codes to pull. I figured it was #4 again, but I guess not.

Any Ideas?

BTW the truck has 53kmiles and is still on original sparkplugs. I did replace #4 sparkplug once thinking it was killing the COPs and the old one looked good still.

There is a good chance that the plug insulator may have been cracked in the process of getting the old boot off. You may want to go ahead and replace the plug again. Be sure to put a little silicon lubricant in the boot so that you don't have this problem again.
