Someone once told me that Chrome valve covers were a bad idea because they leaked like crazy. Does anyone know if this is true or not?? I have a 351W slightly built with the stock 4V carb.
Cheap valve covers are junk if you over tighten them. Get a decent set, one with a thick flange or load/torque spreaders. I am not a big fan of chrome, it will eventually chip, but they are are around 1/3rd the cost of billet and 1/2 of cast aluminum. Another option to explore is powder coating.
They say they are baffled, so they should be ok. Sometimes you can buy ones that don't have the baffle at the holes, and the PCV valve will suck oil down in the engine like crazy.
I am getting to were I don't like chrome aircleaners though. I like the way they look, but I haven't had a Ford yet that I could run one in the wintertime. If you are only going to run it in the summer, or you live down south were it doesn't get much below 40, then you will be ok. If you expect your engine to run on a cold miserable rainy day in the winter, then put the stock aircleaner with the heat stove back on and run it.

I guess paying less than $20 for all that wouldn't be too bad even if it only last you a year. Ford has some really nice dress up parts, I only have an 05 catalog, but look here http://www.fordracingparts.com/downl...gs/2007-pp.zip They may cost more, but I feel they are better quality.
Yeah thanks for the info ReAX but the $365 dollar price tag is a little high for a college kid. Anyone else have info on the other set I found on ebay??
I am not a big fan of chrome valve covers. It seems most companies manufacture them from thinner steel so they tweek really easy and leave you with an oily mess. Not to mention the quality of the chrome plating on some of the cheaper ones suck. You bolt em on... a year later all the chrome is flaked of and they are all rusty On the other hand I have seen the Edelbrock chrome valve covers hold up well for a long time... with maintenance of course. Personally I like just painting up the stock ones and running them or the anodized stamped aluminum and cast aluminum. I like a chrome open element air cleaner most of the time accept in wet and or cold conditions. I run a stock closed air cleaner in the winter too.
Thanks yall...I think I am just gonna stick with what I have an maybe powder coat the old valve covers and see if I can just find a new chrome lid for my air cleaner.
I kind of like those ones you found on e-bay, the badges were a nice touch. Most cork valve cover gaskets have metal cores around the bolt holes now to prevent warping your covers. You can also get the spreader bars to help out as well. I have had the same pair of chrome valve covers on my 67 stang for 10 years, no leaks, no chipping, and I got them from a salvage yard so who knows how old they are. Powder coating is a nice alternative though.
