Have you guys heard or know anything about using the Slick 50 diesel oil additive? Came across a couple free cases and thought about using it? Any info will be helpful.
Whoever is giving it away is doing the right thing. I would stay away from the additives and use a good synthetic oil to prevent oil "coking" in the turbo and fuel injector "stiction". All good synthetic motor oils have additives already in them.
its funny that I noticed this post, I was actually going to ask around on here to see if anybody used any sort of additive in their oil. I used to run MOC in my 99 gasser, Curious if it was a good idea with these 6oh's or not.
Oddly enough, I just got a free case of this stuff and haven't been able to find any threads of anybody using it.
I would like to know if anybody has any info on it as well. Slick 50 does not list it in their products on their wesite so I emailed the tech line at Slick-50 and asked them if it was still an 'active' product and did they recommend it for a 6.0L diesel. The reply I received was very brief, he said: "It is a current product line and it will work in your 6.0".
I know that none of this info helps you any more than me, but I am in the same situation.
well cosidering slick 50 is a crap product i would not use it in my 6.0. your truck does not need any oil additives it just needs a oil that meets CI-4. slick 50 has shown to do no good in anything just look at BITOG. It contains heavy amounts of solid teflon.
I saw it at wally world and stopped to read the box...of course it's all sales and nothing specific.
I decided that I'd rather be safe than sorry and leave it on the shelf. I took the chance using STP in my gassers and never had a problem...but this time my gut told me to leave it on the shelf...so I did.
Use a quality convential or synthetic oil of your choosing with either a CI4+ or the newer CJ4 service rating and you will be fine. Just change your filter and oil every 5,000 miles and your good to go.
The addition of additives upsets the chemistry of oil and just adds chemicals and compounds not needed in a quality diesel oil. The more "stuff" known or unknown is just asking for problems with the injectors due to their use of oil to fire them (reason for the high pressure oil pump).
Save your money and if free... throw it away. I wouldn't even use in my lawn mower... just change your oil and filter and sleep well at night!!!!
I'd be scared of what the "chunks of teflon" might do to the spool valves in the injectors if it accumulated there. They're already sensative enough as it is without adding more crap in the oil. Sell it to someone with an older diesel that it won't affect. I remember Bowtiehatr posting very recently about one of his customers having problems because of using an oil additive. Caused all kinds of running problems. Changed the oil and the motor straightened out. Do yourself a favor and DON"T use it. You'll be glad later.
You always have to ask yourself, who has what to gain.
You: Best case, it does no damage and runs fine.
Worst case, need a new engine...
Them: If you buy, they make a sale.
If you don't buy, they mis 1 sale.
If your engine blows, it is no matter to them. They already made their money and it would be very unlikely you would have any recourse. Remember it is always, let the BUYER beware - The seller doesn't care.
In general I agree with the idea of not adding additives without knowing what they are, but additives can help if you get the right ones. I wouldn't tell a sick person to go to the drug store and pick up a bottle of pills and take them. I also don't believe that a good engine oil is going to solve every problem. An engine that has 200,000 miles on it has very different needs than the one that has 10,000 miles on it. I have seen additives make huge impact on equipment, but only when they are specifically prescribed.
