Fluctuating Fuel Gage
85 Bronco XLT with a 302.... was at a stop light and glancede at my gauges, the needle on my gas gauge was quickly going from Full to Empty, I pealed out and stop in a parking lot. Nothing was wrong, no leaks, gas cap was on. So i started to drive again and the needle was all over the gauge going from full to empty, and back to full. Got home and checked the fuel line, I didnt see any problems. I know the gauges flucuate a little but I've never seen this before.I'm guessing i might have a bad fuel gauge or an electrical problem. Any help on this would be great.

A couple of things you may want to check..... crawl under the rear of your truck, just forward of the axle, and reach up to the electrical connector at the fuel tank sending unit (the fuel lines run to the same location). I believe the connector is simply pushed on, and has three terminals inside. Clean all three (CRC contact cleaner and a .22 caliber bore brush work well) and see if that improves things. If not, it could be a bad sending unit, meaning you'll need to remove the tank. Or, as well, you could have a bad guage or dirty contacts there, which can be cleaned by removing the instrument cluster, loosening the speed nuts that hold the guage in, and brightening the contacts on the printed circuit and on the nuts, themselves, with extra-fine grade steel wool.
