I recently had a check engine light come on. There was no change in performance of the truck. Had no rough shifting, no automatice changing into Drive. Nothing like some of the things I had read that could occur with this error code. I went to the auto parts store and had the code run and it appeared as P0705-Transmission Range Sensor PRNDL Input. At first, I reset the computer on the truck to see maybe if it was an error but after a second start of the truck the error did reappear. I then did the research with the helpful assistence of the parts man at my local NAPA auto parts store and found the correct TR Sensor/NSS. This was replaced. I noticed no change it performnace. Everything was fine before and remained fine after replacing the part.
Again, the light stays off this time until the third start of the truck. Check engine light reappears again.
I have checked and re-checked the fluid level and is perfect. I disconnected the battery last night and then re checked my work, check wiring - all appears ok. I disconnected the harness where it plugs in to the TRS and cleaned more and also blew out with air from compressor. I had re connected the battery again. The light has stayed off but have only ran the truck once since so will wait and see if the light comes on again after work today. I was hoping that it was maybe a fluke and would stay off one of these times. What else could be the problem here?? Keeping in mind that the vehiicle is driving just fine at this point, anyway.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance!!!
When you replaced the TRS did line up the marks on it with the transmission in neutral?
I wonder if the NAPA TRS is any good? If it was mine I might try a genuine Ford part.
If that's ok the next step would probably be to take the truck to someone with a scan tool capable of monitoring live data so you could watch what the TRS does while shifting the lever through all the gears.
That thought ran through my mind but too but then I started thinking that if I did end up taking it in and they ran their tests-they could see if they NAPA TRS was not working 100% and could then install a genuine Ford TRS.
Thanks for your 2 cents but I think I am to the point I am going to just take it in so I can get it over and move on.
I would have taken it in a long time ago but the truck is running absoultely no differnet than it was prior to the Check Engine light coming initially. That is the baffling part!!!
Well, here is the reslut.... they traced the wiring and found an open circuit 1143 and found a "chewed wire) apparently from some type animal.critter. They repaired the wire and Presto!
I drive my truck every day so I am having a hard time thinking that this happened since I have owned the truck- I am thinking the past owner may have had it parked over a period of time and now the wire just finally now gave in. Who knows!!! Anyway, the headache is over. 1.5 hours of labor paid and we are set again.
I'm glad you got it fixed. I know the labor was steep but at least it wasn't a expencive transmission problem. Sometimes its the little problems that are the hardest to fix. I had a vacuum leak on my truck that took me several wks to find. It was a tiny split in a hard plastic line behind the battery.
I have a 1997 F-250 and the same symptom occured. Although, I am having rough shifting from time to time. Where is the TRS sensor located? So I can check the wiring.
Any assisatance would be greatly appreciated!
Dave,
Thanks again for your assistance. I started at the sensor and worked back towards the engine compartment and found out the guys that replaced my 5.4L motor failed to secure the wiring harness on the battery side of the motor. THe harness was resting on the exhaust manifold and had melted the plastic casing and the insulation of a few of the wires in the harness exposing the copper, therfore shorting them to ground. I insulated the wires and taped them up, secured the harness on the binding post that it was supposed to be on and ALL is well with the world!!!
I am impressed the computer code had reported exactly what was wrong and I just had to find the short.
