I took a chisel, got behind the chrome part, and broke it off by hitting the chisel with a hammer. Then you can reach up in there and release the pin that holds it in place.

Sounds like you need a bigger hammer. Franklin2's appoach works. Find an old Ford (car or truck) at the wrecking yard that has a similar switch. If it's ready for the crusher they probably won't mind you trying different ways to remove the lock cylinder. Do ask first.

You can try to attack it from behind the steering wheel. Take the steering wheel off, and start trying to get to the cylinder. Whats holding it in there is a spring loaded pin that lockes into the column casting. That pin can be pushed up from the outside if you had the key. Now you have to figure out a different way to get to it.

Maybe you need to get one of the local neighborhood hoodlums to show you how to work that slide hammer
