First time changing oil

Alright guys, I am about to change the oil on my 6.0L PSD for the first time myself (dealer did the first one for free). I have read in the tech folder how to do it, seems very easy and straight forward. Is there anything I should look for or be careful of? According to the instructions, all I need to add is 13.5 quarts because some of the oil is left in the rails, pump, etc., is that true? Does the new o-ring come with the filter?

I am planning on using 15W-40 Rotella with a Fram filter. Is this a good set up, or should I be using something else? I will probably be moving within the next couple months, but probably either to TX or AZ where the climate will be similar to Southern NM. Any advice/pointers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Your game plan sounds just fine. I have used Rotella 15W-40 for summer and winter for the past 80K and have had no problems. Fram is a rebranded Racor filter, so you are good there and it does come with the o-ring. The only thing that I do different is add 14qts and it always works out just perfect and you do not have a 1/2 quart of oil laying around.

Wink Try This . . .

Start w/ the 13.5 and check dip stick after you drive it once. Add accordingly . . .

I just changed mine for the first time and I concur with LoneWolf....add slowly and start checking the dip stick after the 13th. I don't know about your manual, but mine says not to add if the level is between the MIN and MAX marks.

I wound up having to drain a little so I've learned my lesson. Once I did, I'm about a quarter of the way between the MIN and MAX. I've made a trip from WV to NH and back and the level has not moved.

Well I was just going by what my diesel tech told me a few years back when I got my truck. 14 qts. has always put me at the half way point between min and max, just like he told me it would be. But you have to do what you feel is right for you.

with my last change i put 16Q of oil in it because amsoil reccomends to add a extra qt with the bypass system, but before then i used 15Q like the manual says.

Oh yeah...make sure you pull the old O ring off of the cover and run a little new oil around the new O ring....just like on the old twist on filters on the gassers.
