friend has a 89 f150 with 300 six that runs intermitently. has replaced fuel shut off switch. ok this is what it is doing. truck runs fine shut it off and try to start again it just turns over. walk away in frustration and come back later still no start but turning over? walk away again come back day or two later and the thing fires right up. any ideas?
I'd have to start with the basics. Look at spark plugs, wires, cap and distributer rotor. When it won't start but turns over, you need a tester to check for spark. Is it getting a good spark. If it is, you need to check for fuel pressure when it's turning over.
here is the thing. you can hear the pump make the buzz when the truck does start. but when it doesn't want to start you don't hear it but still turns over. he has already replaced the fuel shut off switch. truck doesn't die or run rough when running. just when he shuts it off not sure if it will start again.
Look at the Fuel pump relay and the EEC relay right next to it. I would replace the EEC relay ( electronic engine control) , it controls the 12V for the computer and the fuel pump relay and is activated by the ignition switch. Could also be a bad ignition switch causing the relays not to actuate. The second time I had your problem it was the switch ( a new one ) was eiither bad or not adjusted correctly, but I had another so I replaced it. The first time it was the EEC relay. It took weeks to find the bad relay as it was intermitent. ( it had water in it )
