400/Gummy Dizzy

I recently started having problems with preignition, faulty radar detector signals and the garage door opener. I new it was my ignition but couldn't find anything till I pulled the dizzy (10,000 miles Accel billet).

I found the shaft hard to turn and on dissassemble the shaft was all gummed up. The motor also has only 10,000 miles on it and gets regular oil changes with Castrol. I was getting a lot of spark scatter apparently.

I've seen this problem on older motors but cannot figure out why it would be happening to this engine. Any thoughts?

400c.i., Crane Roller cam, composition gear (no wear at all). Good oil pressure on a standard pump.

HEAT!
Gummy oil can mean burnt oil. I don't know why a distributor shaft would be hot, except from friction.

Do you have a valley pan?

Yeah, got the valley pan, engine temp runs around 185/195. Oil temp less than that usually. I wondered if it's not oiling properly but don't see how that could be.

Pull the distributor when the motor is hot after running at highway speeds for a while. Then check the shaft temperature and look for oil.

My old D1AE block has a hole between the lifter valley and the distributor area. This hole appears to have been made after the block was cast. It could be a factory mod to allow extra oil to the dist. from the lifter valley.

I guess I'll check it again in a couple of hundred miles. It did clean up and turn easily with just wiping out with oil.
