My fuel gauge needle always shows full. The 'Miles Remaining' reading on the information display does count down, but it's way off, indicating a lot more fuel than what I know to be in the tank. (I've always wondered how that was mechanisms calculated that, but the bigger problem is the gas gauge. Anyone have any ideas? For now we're just using the tripmeter on the odometer.
Sounds like the float in the fuel tank is stuck. Unfortunately, you gotta drop that sucka to repair it. Maybe a complete top off, and I mean COMPLETE , would help. Driving over a really rough road might help it, too. Just a WAG.
My gas gauge just started sticking up at completely full (past the full line) Its weird though, because it was functioning correctly after i filled up (went down at least 1/4 of a tank), and then the next morning when i started up the truck, it was back at completely full, and stayed that way even after driving a lot. I live in the middle of dallas, so really bumpy roads are hard to come by lol, any suggestions to 'unstick' it other than just topping WAY off?
Its just suprising to me that it was working and then stopped...
If it helps, the miles to empty reads like the tank is full, but the mpg calculator seems to work (must measure gas somewhere else...)
I have an '89 f250,I drained the tank and put in a new fuel pump. This was a rear tank. The front tank was reading correct before I put gas in the rear tank, now it's pegged out past the full mark. I haven't had a chance to look at it.Kinda hoping I could find some info before I checked all the wiring.Still looking for answers.
Try to ground the tank to the frame with a jumper cable. (If gas tank is a steel one) You might have a ground wire problem.
If this doesn't help try resetting your dash gauge assy. Hold in your reset button for trip meter when you turn key to on position about (6 sec.) it will cause guages to go in to "diagnostic mode" odometer will count up 11111 , 22222 , 33333 etc to 00000 then be done.
I had this help when lightning struck near a truck and it acted all goofy before reset of dash.
Just a try, Rich.

Is this for real? and if so what is the appropriate procedure for doing it. I tried it and it didn't work. Either I am missing something or you were pulling my leg...
I certainly hope you are serious, because it sounds like it might potentially fix my issue....
Issac, Yes this is for real. I have a 2002 Excursion and in order to do it you begin by:
(1)putting key in ignition.
(2)push in trip odometer reset button & hold in.
(3)turn ignition key foreward to on/run position
(4)watch dash cluster assy. when gauges peg out release button.
(5)let it do its reset it takes about 15sec.
(6)turn off key.
Its worth a try. Good luck. Rich.
I have digital odometer I'm not sure it will work on analog units let me know.
