One of our work trucks had the check engine light come on this morning and the driver said the turbo guage is at 0. It's a stock 06 250 with 44,000 miles. What are the chances there was some indication of a problem that the driver missed? What PSI should these trucks typically run at? I've got 2 of these trucks and want to make sure I catch this type of problem before it happens again. The 7.3's did not come with a turbo guage, and I haven't had to replace a turbo in one of those yet. If there's something different to watch on the 6.0 I'd like to know.
The turbo outlet hose to the intercooler has been known to blow off. Check under the hood: first look from the intake to the turbo then to the intercooler then to the intake manifold. If you have any more info from the driver that you can post it could help us give you somewhere to start looking. Some recent posts with videos have shown there are audio signs of turbo issues. Sounds of sputtering (my description)was the biggest indication I heard on the tapes. To be honest just about anything can happen suddenly, it's up to the owners/operators to pay attention to what's going on when performance or sounds change when driving.
The trucks will operate normally within 0-20+ PSI, I have seen posts talking over 25-30 PSI.
Now I'm starting to wonder if it is a turbo issue. The check engine light is on and the turbo guage reads 0 psi so I told him not to drive it. The other 06 just showed up in the shop and that guage reads 0 psi as well. That driver said his guage has never worked. Do they put these guages in and not hook them up on the XL trucks? The original problem truck is not idleing rough just has the dash lights lit up.

You know when the turbo goes as there is no power in acceleration, slow shifting, etc. It doesn't hurt to drive this way but it is a real slow truck.
Never mind. Problem turned out to be a squirrel got up in the motor last night and chewed through some wires. We're now getting the wires fixed and looking for some free cats to put on patrol. Thanks for the input.
Ford has a TSB regarding this exact issues: The solution is a .22 caliber rifle and several shells... The cats will work but tend to leave a smelly residue and then you have a cat problem which requires a dog and then a bigger problem see posts regarding (Cat delete).
I couldn't figure this one out. I may have to ask my daughter to translate tonight.
Enomra, thanks for the update. I've added this TSB to our files for distribution to all employees with thier checks on Friday. I have a feeling I will be in need of a good body shop Monday morning.
When does the gauge start to move? Apparently my squirrel truck gauge works but the other 6.0 I looked at this morning the gauge did not move at all. I revved the motor to 2000 rpm and got nothing. Does the needle move when the truck is in park or only drive?
Your boost will not increase until you put a load on it. Take it out on the road put it in 2 or 3 on the auto select lever and then give her the throttle and she will boost and should max about 20 with out a heavy load and when pulling a steep Hill or with a trailer she should get to 26-28 psi max...
