Misfire...?

I have a '93 F150 4x4 E4OD 351...it has about 119k miles.

I bought the truck used from a local Dodge dealer and got a killer deal on it. Spent only $1,500 for the bad boy. So I obviously dont know how it was treated by the previous owner.

I started to feel a shuttering between 40-50mph so I first thought it was my tranny going out because Ive read that the E4OD are notorious for failing. So I took it to my tranny guy and he and 2 other tech's test drove my truck and came to the conclusion that it isnt my tranny. They said 1-2 shift nice and firm but 3-4 is kind of soft. He recommended that I drop the pan and also drain the torque converter out and it should be good to go again. But he also said the him and the 2 other tech's feel that the shuttering Im feeling is caused by a misfire.

On the way home from the tranny shop, I stopped by Autozone and checked the codes. I didnt have a engine light on but I figured Id check anyways to see if a code was stored...but nothing came up.

What are some things that cause misfires? Where should I start?

Plugs, wires, caps?

Im hoping my piston rings and wall arent ruined.

Im on a college budget so I cant just start replacing parts...Id like to know where the most logical place to start.

Thanks.
