all of the sudden my 1991 F150 2WD 5.8L (153K) would not engage into drive (it will only roll down the driveway. sometimes it engages no problem). At the same time, that the tranny acted up, I started experiencing an erratic idle (the idle goes up and down and sometimes it idles fine).
i replaced my IAC, TPS, tranny fluid & filter (prior to the change the fluid was clean and not burned). the symptoms are the same. is it safe to say without question that my E4OD needs replacement?
or could the erratic idle problem be causing the transmission problems. i believe the answer is no but I would just like to verify before i pick up another transmission. or can it simply be some sort of solenoid on the tranny that is causing the problem?
I appreciate any tips before i commit to the new tranny
Did you try pulling the codes? Being an electronically controlled transmission the E4OD can sometimes be good about telling you whats wrong... Often times - not. Good luck.
Also, is it possible that your gear indication needle on the cluster is out of alignment? I have heard a few cases where guys had to move the shifter until the needle lined up with 2 or 1 to make it engine into drive, or move it past 1 on the right to get it to engage into 2nd or 1st. I say this because you said it will roll down the driveway while in drive when it doesn't engage, which sounds like it might actually be in neutral. Just a thought.
when it does engage it shifts and runs beautifully....then 1/2 hour later itll go out again.
Skandocious,
let me clarify, actually it does go into gear...but when i give it gas it barely moves...it just rolls. so to drive down our lane it will be spining at 3000 rpms and only doing a few mph.
No I have not read the codes. I don't know how. In addition, I won't take the risk of driving it anywhere...???
any ideas of what to do? I found a 24 mo/24K mi warranty rebuilt trans in Schaumburg, IL for $900. just want to make sure before i buy this.
Well it would be an awful shame to dump $1000 into a new tranny when it could possibly be fixed by something easy. Go to your local auto parts store and buy an OBD1 code reader for around 30 bucks. Of you can jump the pins with a paper clip for free. There are instructions for doing that at fordfuelinjection.com
get it to a shop before throwing parts at it
especially 1000.00 trans
go to fordfuelinjection.com as skandocious said
just to learn about this trans
a lot of shops still throw parts at these trans
for lack of knowledge and will cost you money
read and learn to save yourself money
this can be something as simple as a bad ground wire
or corrosion at one of the conectors
Your bad transmissions usually do not come and go...once it's done, that's it.
I'm agreeing with mhg in that it now appears to be some sort of bad connection somewhere.
If you disconnected your battery before replacing the sensors, the Powertrain Control Module has to relearn its strategy. By driving to the dealer, it may now have been reset, with the new sensors, and working just fine.
