I had a problem with the ABS and brake lights coming on for no reason, on my 90 XLT. They would come on sometimes when I was idling for a while, and not even using the brakes. Lately they started coming on more. The brakes work fine. I realize the pads/shoes have nothing to do with the lights, but all of the brakes are relatively new. Anyway, I fixed the problem by unplugging the sensor on the differential to stop the brake light, and removing the bulb in the dash to stop the ABS light. Brakes work fine, no more annoying lights. I have heard of other people who had this problem and their brakes worked fine, and they spent a bunch of money to try and stop the lights from coming on. I spoke to a Ford mechanic, and he said the only way to correct this is to check all kinds of components ($$$). I have better things to spend time and money on than figuring out why brake lights come on, when the brakes work fine. I don't even like rear wheel ABS! 4 wheel ABS is great, but rear only is worth than nothing, in my opinion. Makes the front lock up, then you can't steer. I had an accident in an F150 because of this. Anyway, I would like to hear some more about people's experiences with these lights, as this problem seems to be fairly common on big Broncos.
The only experience I have had with it on my 1991 EB was when I blew a wheel cylinder on the right rear wheel. ABS and brake warning light came on. Replaced the cylinder, bled the brakes and the lights cleared. The ABS light stays on all the time in my brothers 1991 F-250....but brakes work fine. Lots of help huh?
