So my lights flicker and dim heavily depending on engine speed - and my voltage regulator looks like it's OEM - and on a '76 truck, that's pretty old. I've bought a replacement from Broncograveyard and attempted to get the old one out but it's rusted on there REAL nice.
My questions:
Does the regulator have to be installed in the exact same place? Does it need to be grounded where it mounts, or is it grounded by its internal wiring?
And there's also a little cylindrical piece that plugs into it too - looks like a condenser - what function does that serve?
My '75 wiring "plans" show the regulator's case being grounded.
I don't know anything about rust really :/ but it's hard to believe the old one can't be removed. (?)
BTW, BTDT on the regulator with the lights going bright and dim... my original was a mechanical-type with relays etc (tall box) and my new Borg/Warner is electronic (flat box) and works extra good. :)
If your old one is electronic then your old one prob'ly ain't the problem... with all that rust it's prob'ly a half-way bad ground or half-way bad connection (or both ;).
Yes, you'll want to clean the rust off the inner fender where the voltage regulator is fastened down. I've had regulator failure because the ground was not good. Have not used the noise suppressor for years without any problems.
The voltage regulator on my 77 is different than the one on my 79. I have the same problems with my 77. Its more circular than the rectangular one on the 79.
So, I answered my own first question after installing it the other night - the screws that were rusted solid were the tiny ones that bolt the regulator to the housing. The housing that actually bolts to the frame was secured by larger self tapping bolts, and they were cake to get out of there.
So, here's the pic of my old one, the little condensor is only used to prevent electrical noise? Where can I pick up a new one of those? What do I ask for?
ok, 3 questions: what's the vacuum reservoir for? and it looks like the ignition modulator had a meltdown and was replaced. what will clean the mess up and what does the modulator do?

First Ford with an alternator, 1963 T-Bird, and the first part number was: C3SZ-10316-A. Since 1963, there have been at least five part number changes. The fourth change saw the old black painted tall cover replaced by the much shorter rounded off cover. Even tho the later style looks different, it is used on almost every Ford car and truck (except diesels) from 1963 thru the 1990's.
