I own a 1997 F250 4x4 with a 460 engine. I use this truck as a tow vehical. The original motor is really underpowered and I am considering replacing the original engine with a new 550HP 460 crate motor from Ford Racing. My existing engine uses fuel injection (EFI) and the crate motor is carburated. Here are my questions.
Option 1 - Convert the crare motor to fuel injection (EFI)
a. Will my existing EFI manifold bolt directly to the new crate motors Super Cobra Jet heads?
b. If not, who makes an aftermarket EFI manifold for this crate motor?
c. Does my truck's on board computer require any mod's to run this set-up?
Option 2 - Install the "carburated" crate motor in the truck
a. Will this affect my on board computer?
b. What computer mod's are required to run a carburated motor in an EFI truck?
Any help from someone who's "been there" is greatly appreciated!
with that engine youre going to have to go to a carb. change ignition, fuel pump, either delete the stock pumps or use a fuel pressure reg. with no more than 8 psi. i dont know what to say about engine balance, flywheel or flexplate. this engine comes already assembled i believe
Buy a stroker short block. Send your heads to Scott J to have them ported and larger valves installed. Port the intake, get larger injectors, and have the ECM reflashed. But if you live in Cali. I dont know how your going to get it smoged. Or go the way Troy said, but if you have a auto you will have to get a stand alone computer to make the tranny shift. If you have a stick no problem, but you still cant smog it.

As for the ECM reflash you need to contact a SCT dealer. Their is one that is a sponser of this board. Just go to the top of the page under shop and click parts and acess.
