Question Tranny temp?

What is the average temp my trasmission should be working at on my 1996, 5.8L V8, reg cab, short bed 4WD F150? I have the E4OD tranny and has 64,000 miles on it. I am wandering because I just got a electronic interceptor gauge by aeroforce and I want to see how accurate it is.
Thanks, Shane

My 96 f250 with the 7.5 and 4EOD shows around 150 all the time unless I'm towing and then it climbs up to 190 depending on where I'm driving. Sometimes spikes can occur on slow uphill driving but I never see over 190

I am not a trans expert, but everything that I have heard and read from people that are experts (or so they seem to be) say that 180 is the ideal operating temperature.

Climb over 180 or stay much below 180 as I understand it.

I had my trans built by these guys and have spoken to them (Kevin - The tech support down there) and my trans runs awesome and Kevin told me that 180 is ideal. I asked him about going through the radiator then into an aux cooler and he said that you don't want to the fluid to get cool...just do what it takes to get 180 and leave it like that. Thats what I did and it's working well!

I think there is a lot of views as far as running the lines thru the rad. I wouldnt remove
the lines if i lived in the midwest. but here in az. i have never had any thing bad happen due to not running them.it sure does run cooler the only thing i have been told is to make sure the flow rate is right thru cooler unhook return line from cooler and at 2000 rpm it should fill a qt every 15 sec. if not then tranny will get hot

Temp will vary

Where you put your temp sender will determine what you see on the gauge. In the pan, input line, output line or in one of the plugs in the side of the tranny will all read different. Most say install it in the pan and you will read the most consistant temps.

I agree, mine is on the output line to the radiator and I can see spikes happen quickly when pulling my 26 ft 5th wheel (6000 lbs). After it goes to the radiator it goes to the factory cooler in front of the radiator and then to an additional fin style cooler in series with that. Then it goes back to the transmission. I read on one of these forums that the 95/96 F250's even with the trailer tow package had too small of a transmission cooler. So after having some high temps and overflow onto the ground once I added the guage and an additonal cooler. Now I have no problems.

the gauge I am using actually plugs into the OBD2 port. I not sure how accurate this is though???

Its multiple gauges in one. A great idea I think, yhere are some very use parameters on it.
